Salary: Band 11 (starting salary £53,583 rising to £58,455, pro rata)

Location: Agile, Forth Banks Police Station and homeworking

Hours/Contract: Permanent, 22.5 hours per week

Department: Legal Department - Force Lawyer (Employment & Contracts)

Northumbria Police is seeking a dedicated Force Lawyer specializing in Employment Law to join our Legal Department. Reporting to the Head of Legal, you will provide expert legal advice on employment matters and defend employment tribunal claims, contributing to our mission of keeping the community safe.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage employment law casework, conduct tribunal proceedings including advocacy, and liaise with stakeholders to deliver legal services to the Chief Constable.
  • Provide timely legal advice on employment issues to support decision-making.
  • Select, appoint, and oversee external legal specialists, ensuring value for money and quality advice.
  • Research new legislation and case law, assess impacts, and inform policies to minimize litigation risks.
  • Prepare reports, tribunal updates, and media statements with recommendations.
  • Draft legal documents such as agreements, MOUs, and transfer agreements under the Police Act 1996, and advise on contractual matters.
  • Maintain your own CPD and stay updated on employment law changes.
