Job summary

Serco is hiring a Mechanical Technician for the Great Western Hospital in Swindon. You will maintain critical mechanical building services across a busy acute hospital, contributing to patient safety and reliability of healthcare operations.

You will complete planned and reactive maintenance, work a rotating two-week shift, participate in weekend and out-of-hours rosters, and use CAFM to document activities and compliance.

Qualifications

  • Completed a recognised mechanical apprenticeship or equivalent with a Level 3 qualification (e.g., NVQ, City & Guilds) in mechanical engineering, HVAC, or building services.
  • Strong fault-finding and repair skills across a range of mechanical plant and systems.
  • Willingness to participate in shift patterns, weekends and call-out arrangements.

Responsibilities

  • Perform planned preventive maintenance, reactive repairs, inspections, servicing, fault-finding and testing on mechanical building services.
  • Maintain and repair boilers, pumps, heating and chilled water systems, calorifiers and associated plant room equipment.
  • Support ventilation system operation including air handling units, extract systems, fans and controls.
  • Respond to plant failures, alarms and service interruptions; escalate risks as needed.
  • Accurately record maintenance activity and asset information in CAFM; ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Work safely following permits, risk assessments and local safe systems of work.

Up to £40,000 per annum + plus excellent benefits

Working Pattern: Required to work a rotating two-week shift pattern, Monday to Friday, comprising one week of early shifts (07:00 to 15:30) followed by one week of late shifts (10:30 to 19:00). The role also requires mandatory participation in the departmental weekend rota and out-of-hours call-out rota to support operational and emergency service requirements.

As a Mechanical Technician in our Health team at Great Western Hospital, you'll help deliver safe, compliant and efficient maintenance of critical mechanical building services across a busy acute hospital. You'll play a vital role in maintaining essential infrastructure, ensuring healthcare services can continue uninterrupted for patients, visitors and clinical teams.

What You'll Do As a Mechanical Technician
  • Complete planned preventive maintenance, reactive repairs, inspections, servicing, fault-finding and testing on mechanical building services.
  • Maintain and repair boilers, pumps, heating and chilled water systems, calorifiers, pressure systems and associated plant room equipment.
  • Support the maintenance and operation of ventilation systems, including air handling units, extract systems, fans, filters and associated controls.
  • Respond promptly to plant failures, alarms, leaks and service interruptions, protecting critical services and escalating risks where necessary.
  • Accurately record maintenance activity, repairs, asset information and compliance evidence using the Computerised Aided Facilities Management (CAFM) system.
  • Work safely in accordance with permits, risk assessments, healthcare guidance, statutory regulations and local safe systems of work.
Does this sound like you?
  • Completed a recognised mechanical apprenticeship or equivalent structured training, supported by a relevant Level 3 qualification such as NVQ, City and Guilds, or equivalent in mechanical engineering, plumbing, heating, building services or HVAC.
  • Demonstrable experience maintaining mechanical building services within a commercial, industrial, healthcare or similarly regulated environment.
  • Strong fault-finding and repair skills across a range of mechanical plant and systems, with the ability to identify practical solutions.
  • Good understanding of safe systems of work, permit-to-work procedures, risk assessments and mechanical isolation processes.
  • Confident using CAFM or maintenance management systems and digital tools to maintain accurate records.
  • Able and willing to participate in shift patterns, weekend working and out-of-hours call-out arrangements.
