Job summary

Serco Limited is seeking a Mechanical Engineer at HMP Dovegate to maintain and improve critical mechanical and gas systems within a secure establishment. The role focuses on safety, reliability, and compliant operation to support rehabilitation and wellbeing.

You will perform routine maintenance, diagnose faults, and install new equipment while ensuring up-to-date documentation and collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team.

Qualifications

  • A recognised mechanical engineering apprenticeship or equivalent trade-based qualification (such as C and G or NVQ).
  • Gas Safe registration with experience in both commercial and domestic systems desirable.
  • Ability to work independently, manage workload and meet tight timescales.
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative, customer-focused approach.
  • Flexible, proactive mindset with a commitment to continuous improvement.
  • AP qualification or willingness to train to become AP desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out routine mechanical maintenance, planned preventative maintenance, repairs and testing of gas systems.
  • Diagnose faults and rectify defects on plant and equipment across the site.
  • Install new mechanical plant and equipment in line with specifications and standards.
  • Keep maintenance schedules and compliance records up to date.
  • Support a multi-skilled facilities team, escorting contractors when required.
  • Work safely at all times, following statutory requirements and site procedures.

£38,814 per annum + £160 p/w on call allowance + excellent benefits

As a Mechanical Engineer in our Facilities Management team, you'll play a vital role in keeping a secure establishment safe, compliant, and operating effectively. Your expertise will help ensure critical mechanical and gas systems run reliably every day, supporting colleagues, residents, and the wider community.

What you’ll do as a Mechanical Engineer

Vetting and checks

An Enhanced DBS check is required for this role. This includes spent and unspent convictions, cautions, and any relevant information held by local police, in accordance with the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act and safeguarding requirements. You will also complete an Occupational Health Questionnaire to allow us to provide any support needed for you to succeed in the role.
