Job description

Flexible Energy (Senior) Associate

Department: Research

Employment Type: Permanent - Full Time

Location: Oxford, UK

Description

Based in Oxford, you will be a core member of Aurora's Great Britain (GB) Research team, with a focus on batteries and flexible assets. The position suits an analyst or senior analyst with hands-on experience of the flexible energy space - for example at a BESS optimiser, trader or route-to-market provider, or at a storage developer, IPP or investor - or a strong quantitative candidate from a top-tier strategic or economic consultancy, energy company, financial services company, or knowledge-focused firm or institution with exposure to the flexible energy space. The successful candidate will combine technical ability with a track record of dependable, independent delivery in team-oriented environments.

You will take ownership of a project at a time, defining the analytical approach, identifying and solving problems as they arise, and suggesting next steps. You will manage and coach one to three junior colleagues, deliver high-quality market analysis, forecasts and insight to our subscribers and bespoke clients, and build specialist expertise in the economics of storage and flexibility - becoming a reliable voice on the subject internally and with client counterparts such as analysts, project managers and optimisers.

You will work in a dynamic, stimulating, and demanding yet supportive environment. You will apply your strong interpersonal skills to thrive in connected, cooperative project teams. Over time, and under the guidance of senior colleagues, you will grow into an industry expert at the world's leading electricity market modelling firm.

Key Responsibilities
  • Delivering rigorous quantitative analysis of GB power, storage and flexibility markets, producing our long-term forecasts for BESS revenues
  • Building specialist knowledge of batteries and flexible assets: how revenues stack across wholesale, the Balancing Mechanism, ancillary services and the Capacity Market, and the trade-offs that shape how real assets are sized, contracted and dispatched
  • Managing your own project end to end - identifying and solving problems, suggesting next steps, and planning two to six months ahead to manage risks and avoid crunches
  • Line managing and coaching one to three junior colleagues - both as their day-to-day manager on projects and in their longer-term development - and leading interviews for more junior roles
  • Leading client workshops and presenting a range of content in client meetings, with clear storylines and slides that communicate implications rather than outputs, and building relationships with client counterparts such as analysts, project managers and optimisers
  • Identifying and delivering improvements to research processes, including repeatable AI-enabled approaches, and optimising how the team works through the adoption and use of AI
  • Contributing to the development of an Aurora research product (e.g. Flex), working with our modelling and software teams to translate analytical priorities into client-facing tools
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Required attributes:

  • 3-5 years of experience at a BESS optimiser, trader or route-to-market provider, or at a storage developer, IPP or major consultancy, energy company, financial services company, or other knowledge-focused firm or institution, including exposure to battery storage or flexibility
  • First-class or high second-class university degree, ideally in a quantitative or technical discipline (e.g. engineering, economics, mathematics, physics)
  • Awareness of the commercial questions a real BESS owner or optimiser faces - duration and sizing, route-to-market and optimiser contract structures, cycling and degradation trade-offs, grid connection and availability - and the judgement to keep analysis relevant to them
  • Demonstrated success in taking responsibility for project and process management in team-oriented environments
  • Proven ability to interpret and derive insight from complex quantitative data and information
  • Ability to communicate clearly and co-operate effectively with both technically and non-technically minded people, including in client meetings and workshops
  • A practical, curious approach to using AI tools in day-to-day analytical work
  • Self-starting, entrepreneurial mind-set, and a genuine interest in the energy transition

Desirable attributes:

  • Practical understanding of how flexible assets operate in-market from a trading or optimisation perspective - for example bidding and dispatch logic, revenue stacking, and participation in wholesale, balancing and ancillary market
  • Exposure to the investment case for storage, such as revenue forecasting, underwriting, or tolling and floor structures
  • Leadership, management or mentoring experience demonstrated by previous roles of professional responsibility
  • Competence in advanced data analytics (e.g. Python, R, SQL, advanced Excel)
  • Experience of using AI tools to speed up or improve analytical work
  • Strong academic record, such as a Master's degree or PhD in a relevant discipline
