As well as asset management, the team also oversees driver support and training and strives to ensure National GridDistribution employees enjoy a service that enables them to work effectively and efficiently.

Job Introduction

An opportunity is available for a Fleet Workshop Team Leader based at our Bristol depot. This hands‑on role supports workshop operations across Bristol, Bath and Weston‑Super‑Mare, providing day‑to‑day management and support across the depots. Some travel between sites will be required.

You'll play a key role in creating a safe, compliant and high‑performing workshop environment. You'll lead and develop a team that delivers efficient Vehicle Maintenance Unit (VMU) operations, ensuring all work meets strict regulatory standards.

Responsible for the maintenance and availability of HGVs, LCVs, trailers and plant equipment, you'll make sure every asset is safe, reliable and cost‑effective, through a mixture of hands on mechanical and office based activities while supporting operational needs with minimal downtime. Working closely with the Regional Fleet Manager, you'll act as the vital link between the Fleet team and Field Operations - driving clear communication, aligned priorities and swift resolution of vehicle‑related issues.

Main Responsibilities
  • Lead and develop regional VMU team and individuals to drive operational excellence.
  • Ensuring the efficient and cost-effective operation of the Workshop
  • Manage workshop expenditure in line with Op-Ex budgets, ensuring cost-effective delivery.
  • Oversee workshop compliance, safety, and ISO accreditation activities.
  • Issuing, checking and completion of documentation relating to the activities of the Workshop.
  • Holding regular team meetings, representing the team locally in matters concerning the Workshop activities.
  • Carry out annual Performance Development Reviews of the team.
  • Monitoring sickness absence and carrying out return to work interviews; agreeing annual leave requests from the team.
  • Liaising with other departments, drivers, external suppliers and customers.
  • Managing the accident damage process.
  • Undertaking regular stock checking of parts, tools and equipment.
  • Setting priorities and programming of the team’s work.
The Ideal Candidate

You will have considerable mechanical experience with proven experience in leading or managing workshop operations in a fast pasted environment. You will have a strong understanding of fleet regulations and compliance. Be able to confidently use fleet management systems for maintenance records, reporting and accessing technical information.

Be a clear, effective communicator with good organisational ability and be able to manage competing priorities and high workloads, ensuring essential fleet assets are returned to service quickly and safely

Along with the above experience and skills you will hold:

  • NVQ/IMI level 2 or 3 in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair
  • Full driving licence (Class C desirable)
  • IRTEC Licensed
  • IMI Electric Vehicle Maintenance System Repair and Replacement
  • ADAS Trained
  • Air Conditioning F-Gas Certified
  • IOSH Certified

Evidence of your qualifications will be required prior to appointment.
