Job summary

National Grid Electricity Distribution is seeking an Operator to join the Major Projects South West Maintenance team at the Bristol depot. You will support safe, reliable operation of the 132kV network and contribute to field maintenance across the South West region.

You will work alongside a Craftsperson, perform asset inspections, planning, bookings and timesheets, often outdoors at tower sites, with training provided for electrical environments and safety procedures.

Qualifications

  • GCSE English and Maths (Grades A–G / 1–9) or an equivalent qualification such as Functional Skills.
  • A full UK driving licence and flexibility to travel within the Plymouth and Cornwall area.
  • Confidence and competence in using tools safely.
  • Ideally, some experience in an electrical environment — but training will be provided.
  • Interest, confidence and ability to work at height.
  • Strong organisation and problem‑solving skills.
  • A willingness to take part in standby duties when required.
  • Excellent safety awareness — following procedures and using protective equipment.
  • Flexible, team‑focused approach.
  • Evidence of your qualifications will be required prior to appointment.
  • Upper weight limit of 135kg for roles involving work at height or fall‑arrest equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the maintenance, replacement and repair of assets up to 132kV, including inspections.
  • Carry out basic job planning, bookings and timesheets, ensuring documentation is accurate.
  • Work in field settings, often outdoors at steel tower locations, solo or with a small team.
  • Support fast-paced, hands-on operations while maintaining safety and compliance.

We have an exciting opportunity for an Operator to join our Major Projects South West Maintenance team based from our Bristol depot. In this role, you’ll play a key part in supporting the safe and reliable operation of our electricity network, up to and including 132kV network across the South West region. This is a fantastic chance to contribute to essential electricity distribution maintenance while developing your skills within a supportive and dynamic environment. Main Responsibilities

As an Operator, you will work alongside a Craftsperson to support the construction, maintenance, replacement and repair of assets up to and including 132kV equipment. You may also be required to carry out asset inspections. You’ll also completing basic job planning, job bookings, timesheets, and ensuring all documentation is accurate and up to date. You’ll spend much of your time out in the field — either lone working while undertaking inspections or as part of a team of up to four, predominantly outdoors at steel tower locations. The environment is fast-paced, hands-on, and requires someone who can act quickly, decisively and responsibly.

Ideal Candidate
  • GCSE English and Maths (Grades A–G / 1–9) or an equivalent qualification such as Functional Skills.
