Job summary

ICAEW is seeking an experienced Financial Controller for its SME in Skelmersdale. You will own day-to-day finance, lead a small team, and partner with operational teams to drive performance and growth.

The role requires robust management accounting, Sage expertise, and a hands-on, commercial approach with UK travel. You will oversee budgeting, cash flow, year-end, and reporting, delivering timely analysis for decision making.

Qualifications

• ACA/ACCA/CIMA qualification, or significant relevant experience.
• Experience in manufacturing, engineering or a similar operational environment.
• Strong management accounting and financial control experience.
• Experience managing and developing a small finance team.
• Good working knowledge of Sage.
• Strong Excel and reporting skills.
• A practical, hands-on approach.
• The confidence to work with operational and senior stakeholders.
• Occasional UK travel to subsidiary site.

Your new company

You'll be joining an established and successful manufacturing SME based in Skelmersdale. The business has built a strong reputation within its specialist market and is looking to strengthen its leadership team with the appointment of an experienced Financial Controller. Your new role

Reporting directly to the Managing Director, you'll take ownership of the day‑to‑day finance function, managing a small team while remaining very hands‑on yourself.

• Managing and developing a small finance team
• Producing monthly management accounts and reporting using Sage.
• Budgeting, forecasting and cash flow management
• Managing the year‑end process and external audit
• Maintaining robust financial controls and processes

What you'll need to succeed

You'll be an experienced Financial Controller or senior finance professional who enjoys working within an SME environment and being close to the numbers and the wider business. Ideally, you will have:

• ACA, ACCA or CIMA qualification, or significant relevant experience
• Previous experience within manufacturing, engineering or a similar operational environment
• Strong management accounting and financial control experience
• Experience managing and developing a small finance team
• Good working knowledge of Sage
• Strong Excel and reporting skills
