Job summary

Staffline seeks an experienced Financial Controller to manage day‑to‑day financial control, reporting and statutory compliance. Reporting to the Finance Director, you will lead the accounts team, oversee payroll and cashflow, and drive profitability analysis across projects in an SME engineering/manufacturing environment.

You will bring hands‑on leadership, robust financial controls, and a proactive approach to process improvements, audits, and compliance, with responsibility for management

Qualifications

• Experience leading a finance function in an SME.
• Strong management accounting and financial control experience.
• Advanced Excel skills and Sage 50 knowledge.
• Familiarity with MRP, stock accounting and WIP calculations.

Responsibilities

• Prepare monthly management accounts and financial reports.
• Lead and develop the accounts team.
• Oversee payroll, PAYE, pensions and compliance.
• Submit VAT returns and manage cashflow forecasting.
• Support audit processes and tax compliance.
• Partner with Finance Director on process improvements.

Job description

Our client, a well-established engineering and manufacturing business, is seeking an experienced Financial Controller to take responsibility for the day-to-day financial management of the company, ensuring robust financial control, accurate reporting and statutory compliance.

Reporting directly to the Finance Director, this is a key leadership position offering broad responsibility across management accounting, payroll, cashflow, project accounting and team management.

Main Duties – Financial Controller

• Production of monthly management accounts and financial reporting
• Leading and developing the accounts team
• Overseeing weekly and monthly payroll processes
• Managing PAYE, pension schemes and associated compliance activities
• Preparing and submitting quarterly VAT returns
• Cashflow forecasting and cash management
• Monthly project analysis and profitability reporting
• Oversight of credit control, sales ledger and purchase ledger functions
• Supporting annual audit processes and tax compliance requirements
• Partnering with the Finance Director on business improvement initiatives and ad-hoc projects

The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate the following: Financial Controller

• Previous experience managing a finance function within an SME environment
• Strong management accounting and financial control experience
• Advanced Excel skills and experience using Sage 50
• Knowledge of MRP systems, stock accounting and WIP calculations
• Experience within engineering, manufacturing, industrial or equivalent environment
• A proactive, hands-on approach with excellent organisational skills
