Job Description:

Job Title: Housing Benefits Officer - Financial Assessments

Day of work: Monday – Friday

Hours of work: 9:00am – 5:00pm

Duration: 6 months Temp ongoing

Location: Hybrid – only required to be onsite if needed

Responsibilities

• Undertake complex financial assessments, recover overpaid benefits, and prevent/detect fraud in accordance with Government regulations and council policies.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of benefits regulations, information security, and data protection.
• Transfer knowledge and skills to new and existing staff, including updates in regulations and systems.
• Familiar with systems, processes, reports used within the section and report issues for resolution.
• Evaluate and review entitlement/contribution for Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support, including complex cases.
• Make decisions on disputes under DMA Regulations or Council Tax Support schemes.
• Reduce overpayments, maximize recovery, and ensure accurate assessments for new claims, cancellations, and changes.

Requirements

• Extensive knowledge of benefits legislation and council policies.
• Experience assessing the full range of Housing Benefit claims, including DHP.
• Experience handling Temporary and Supported accommodation claims.
• Experience working with councils or housing associations.
• Practical experience in Housing Benefit/Council Tax Benefit assessments.
• Ability to communicate effectively with the public, including irate claimants.
• Proficiency with PC data management and manipulation.
