The role covers payroll support, accounts payable and management accounts, with a hands-on approach to routine tasks and evolving priorities. You’ll own a defined workload, ensure accurate coding and posting, reconcile supplier statements, and support month-end processes and payroll reconciliations.

Responsibilities

  • Accounts Payable & Finance Inbox: manage queries, code invoices, reconcile statements, and prepare payments.
  • Management Accounts & Month-End: assist with monthly close, journals, accruals and balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Payroll: support monthly payroll, process changes, reconciliations and records, and confidentiality.
  • Wider Finance Support: assist across the team with ad hoc tasks as priorities shift.

Finance Officer

Salary: £32,000-38,000

Location: Reading

We are seeking an experienced, dependable and detail-oriented Finance Officer to join our finance team in Reading. This is a hands-on role covering payroll support, accounts payable and management accounts, alongside wider finance duties as required. It would suit someone who enjoys taking ownership of a defined workload, values stability and wants to become a long-term, trusted member of the finance team. We are looking for someone who is comfortable with established processes and recurring responsibilities, but who also has the experience, resourcefulness and practical know-how to adapt when priorities, systems or business requirements change.

Key Responsibilities
Accounts Payable & Finance Inbox
  • Manage the finance inbox and respond to supplier queries in a timely manner
  • Process supplier invoices and ensure accurate coding and posting
  • Reconcile supplier statements
  • Prepare regular payment runs
Management Accounts & Month-End
  • Assist with the preparation of monthly management accounts
  • Prepare journals, accruals, and prepayments
  • Perform balance sheet reconciliations
  • Support month-end processes and reporting deadlines
Payroll
  • Support the monthly payroll process, ensuring information is complete, accurate and submitted on time
  • Process payroll changes including starters, leavers, salary changes, overtime, commission and other adjustments
  • Assist with payroll reconciliations and resolve payroll queries
  • Maintain accurate payroll records and supporting documentation
  • Liaise with employees and relevant internal teams on payroll matters
  • Support pension and other payroll-related administration as required
  • Provide cover for payroll processing where required
  • Maintain confidentiality when handling employee and payroll information
Wider Finance Support
  • Provide practical support across the finance team when priorities change, including reconciliations, reporting, payments and other ad hoc finance tasks
Skills & Experience
Essential:
  • Previous hands-on experience in a finance role, including accounts payable and exposure to management accounts
  • Experience supporting or processing payroll, with a good understanding of payroll controls and confidentiality
  • Strong reconciliation skills and high attention to detail
  • Ability to manage a recurring workload reliably and meet monthly deadlines
  • Good Excel skills and confidence using financial systems
  • Practical problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt when processes or priorities change
Desirable:
  • Experience using Sage or similar accounting software and payroll systems
  • Experience in a multi-entity finance environment
