Job summary

Elevation Recruitment Group are delighted to be working with a well-established South Yorkshire contracting group to recruit a Finance Manager. This role reports to the Head of Finance, oversees month-end/year-end reporting, and leads the Management Accounts team as a trusted business partner to senior stakeholders.

The role involves driving financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, controls, and process improvements as part of a finance transformation.

Elevation Recruitment Group are delighted to be working on an exclusive basis with a well-established specialist contracting group in South Yorkshire, recruiting a Finance Manager. This role will be a number 2 role, reporting straight into the Head of Finance and will take ownership in overseeing the month end and year-end financial reporting cycle, lead and develop the Management Accounts team, and act as a trusted business partner to senior stakeholders across the business.

Please note this role will be based 5 days a week on site.

It will be a varied role with duties to include: -

  • Financial Reporting and Analysis:
  • Oversee the preparation and timely delivery of accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management accounts.
  • Lead the preparation of statutory accounts and act as the main point of contact for external auditors during the year-end audit.
  • Review variance analysis prepared by the team and provide clear explanations for variances from budget and forecasts to senior management.
  • Own and continuously improve financial models to support budgeting, forecasting, and long-term planning.
  • Budgeting, Forecasting and Cash Flow:
  • Support the annual budgeting process, working closely with the Head of Finance and budget holders across the business.
  • Oversee the rolling forecast process, ensuring forecasts reflect actual performance and changing business conditions.
  • Provide commercial insight and constructive challenge to budget holders to support informed decision-making.
  • Internal Controls and Compliance:
  • Own and strengthen the internal control framework, ensuring compliance with accounting standards, company policies, and relevant regulations.
  • Monitor and enhance internal control processes to safeguard company assets and ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial data.
  • Prepare, review, and submit monthly VAT returns accurately and on time, in line with Making Tax Digital (MTD) requirements.
  • Act as the main point of contact for HMRC on VAT matters, managing any VAT inspections or enquiries as they arise.
  • Ensure compliance with other tax and statutory reporting requirements, liaising with external advisors as required.
  • Team Leadership and Development:
  • Line manage, coach, and develop the Management Accounts team members, setting clear objectives and supporting professional development.
  • Review and quality-check the team’s work, ensuring accuracy and adherence to deadlines.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement and high performance within the finance function.
  • Business Partnering and Stakeholder Management:
  • Act as a trusted finance business partner to senior managers and non-financial stakeholders across the business.
  • Present financial performance and key findings to senior management and, where required, the Board.
  • Performance Measurement:
  • Develop, monitor, and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) to track business performance.
  • Prepare ad-hoc financial analyses and reports as required by senior management.
  • Systems and Process Improvement:
  • Take ownership of financial systems, including the Coins Construction ERP, and lead initiatives to improve efficiency and accuracy.
  • Lead or manage finance-related projects to support business objectives, including systems implementations and process re-engineering.

The ideal candidate will combine strong technical accounting expertise with proven people management experience, sound commercial judgement, and the ability to communicate complex financial information clearly to non-financial stakeholders. You will ideally have the following skills and experiences:-

  • ACCA/ CIMA/ ACA Qualified
  • Significant post-qualification experience in a management accounting or finance manager role
  • Experience in construction would be ideal but not essential
  • Good IT skills (Experience of COINS would be desirable although not essential)
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel
  • Excellent organisation skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to liaise with and influence individuals at all levels, including senior management
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Proven ability to lead, motivate, and develop a team
  • Able to work on own initiative and as part of a team
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles and financial reporting standards
  • Able to work to deadlines on a regular basis, including under pressure during month-end and year-end
  • Experience of preparing statutory accounts and managing the annual external audit process
  • Professional and motivated approach
  • Experience of using AI to develop and streamline processes is desirable
