Job summary

SMT GB is seeking a Field Service Engineer to cover Warrington and surrounding areas. You will service, repair and maintain Volvo Construction Equipment and allied machinery at customer sites, ensuring maximum uptime and promoting SMT GB’s aftermarket products.

The role requires strong diagnostic and mechanical skills, ability to work independently, and excellent customer communication. A full UK driving licence and field-based flexibility are essential.

Qualifications

• Formal engineering qualification in Plant Maintenance, Agricultural Engineering, HGV Mechanics or related discipline
• Proven experience repairing and maintaining heavy construction plant, agricultural machinery, HGVs or similar
• Strong diagnostic and fault-finding skills across diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics and electrical systems
• Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, wiring diagrams and service information
• Experience using diagnostic tools and electronic service systems
• Excellent problem-solving abilities and a methodical approach to fault diagnosis
• Good communication skills and ability to build relationships with customers and colleagues
• Strong IT skills and confidence using digital reporting systems and mobile technology
• Commercially aware with focus on customer service and identifying opportunities
• Ability to manage workload and prioritize tasks
• Commitment to health, safety and environmental standards
• High attention to detail and professional approach
• Willingness to participate in overtime and call-outs
• Full UK driving licence

About the Role

We are looking for a Field Service Engineer to join our team, supporting customers across Warrington and the surrounding areas.

The focus of this role is to deliver a first-class service to both internal and external customers while maintaining and repairing Volvo Construction Equipment and associated machinery. You’ll be responsible for identifying customer needs, maximising machine uptime and promoting SMT GB’s aftermarket products and services where appropriate.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Service, maintain and repair Volvo Construction Equipment and associated machinery.
• Diagnose and resolve mechanical, hydraulic and electrical faults using technical expertise and diagnostic equipment.
• Identify additional service and repair opportunities and discuss these with customers and internal teams.
• Carry out all work in line with quotations and time guides, highlighting where additional work may be required.
• Install software updates and system enhancements when released.
• Complete electronic job cards, reports and timesheets accurately and in real time.
• Order and manage parts required for repairs and return parts promptly upon job completion.
• Support call-out and overtime requirements where required.
• Attend product and systems training to maintain technical competence and product knowledge.
• Ensure all work is completed safely and in accordance with company and manufacturer standards.

About You

You will have:

• The ability to read and interpret technical manuals, wiring diagrams and service information.
• Experience using diagnostic tools and electronic service systems.
• Excellent problem-solving abilities and a methodical approach to fault diagnosis.
• Good communication skills and the ability to build positive relationships with customers and colleagues.
• Strong IT skills and confidence using digital reporting systems and mobile technology.
• A commercially aware mindset with a focus on delivering excellent customer service and identifying opportunities to support customers further.
• The ability to manage your own workload effectively, prioritising jobs and responding to changing customer requirements.

Desirable

• Welding and fabrication experience.
• Previous experience working with Volvo Construction Equipment or similar heavy plant machinery.
• Experience working in a field-based service environment.
• Familiarity with telematics systems and modern machine technology.
• Relevant health and safety qualifications such as IOSH Working Safely.
• LGV/HGV, plant operator or lifting-related qualifications.
