Job description

Field Service Engineer

Location: Reading / M4 Corridor

Job Type: Permanent

Benefits: Company vehicle, door-to-door pay, overtime, training & development

Are you a Field Service Engineer, Maintenance Engineer or Service Technician looking for a role where no two days are the same?

We're working with a leading provider of automated materials handling and warehouse systems who are looking to strengthen their field service team with an experienced, electrically biased engineer.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone based around Reading or the M4 Corridor who enjoys being hands‑on, solving technical problems and working directly with customers.

You’ll be responsible for keeping sophisticated automated systems operating safely and efficiently, from planned preventative maintenance through to diagnosing and resolving breakdowns.

The Role
  • Attend customer sites across the M4 Corridor and surrounding areas.
  • Carry out planned preventative maintenance and servicing of automated materials handling equipment.
  • Diagnose and repair electrical, mechanical and electro‑mechanical faults.
  • Work on conveyor systems, sortation equipment, automated handling systems and associated machinery.
  • Carry out fault finding on motors, drives, sensors, control systems and PLC‑controlled equipment.
  • Support installation, commissioning, upgrades and modifications where required.
  • Respond to breakdowns and work efficiently to minimise customer downtime.
  • Read and interpret electrical and mechanical drawings and schematics.
  • Complete service reports and maintenance documentation accurately.
  • Work closely with customers, providing a professional and reliable service.
  • Maintain high standards of Health & Safety at all times.
About You

We're looking for a practical, technically minded engineer who enjoys getting to the root cause of a problem rather than simply replacing components.

You’ll ideally have:

  • Previous experience as a Field Service Engineer, Maintenance Engineer, Service Engineer or Engineering Technician.
  • A recognised engineering qualification such as NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds, HNC/HND or equivalent.
  • Strong electrical and mechanical fault‑finding experience.
  • Experience working with industrial machinery, automation, conveyors, materials handling, manufacturing or similar equipment.
  • Knowledge of motors, drives, sensors, inverters and control systems.
  • Experience with PLC fault finding or interrogation would be highly advantageous.
  • The ability to read electrical and mechanical drawings.
  • A full UK driving licence.
  • Excellent communication skills and a professional approach when dealing with customers.
  • The ability to work independently, manage your own workload and remain calm under pressure.
  • Experience specifically within warehouse automation isn't essential if you have strong industrial engineering and fault‑finding experience. Full training and technical development will be provided.
What's In It For You?
  • Competitive salary based on experience.
  • Overtime opportunities.
  • Door-to-door pay.
  • Company vehicle and tools.
  • Ongoing technical training and development.
  • Exposure to modern automation and materials handling technology.
  • A varied field‐based role with no two days the same.
  • Long‑term career development within a growing engineering environment.
  • The opportunity to work with some of the UK's leading logistics, manufacturing and distribution businesses.
Interested?

If you're an experienced engineer based in or around Reading, Newbury, Swindon, Slough, Maidenhead, Oxford or along the M4 Corridor, and you're looking for your next field-based engineering opportunity, we'd love to hear from you.
