Job summary

Valard Construction seeks a Civil Superintendent for its Substations group, based in Onslow, NS. The role leads heavy civil earthworks and site development on an electrical infrastructure project, directing crews and equipment to keep civil work on schedule and ahead of trades that follow.

Reporting to the Site Superintendent, you will oversee civil operations, supervise subcontractor crews, and interpret drawings to implement construction plans while maintaining QA/QC and safety standards.

Qualifications

• 7+ years in a Civil Superintendent or Civil Construction Supervisor role on large-scale heavy civil or earthworks projects.
• Experience supervising crews of 20+ across earthworks, grading, and underground utilities.

Responsibilities

• Oversee civil operations through task delegation and productivity monitoring, ensuring team efficiency in project completion.
• Supervise and coordinate subcontractor crews on-site, ensuring work is performed safely, on schedule, and in accordance with project specifications and quality standards.
• Manage and coordinate daily heavy civil construction activities, organizing tasks to be productive, safe, and efficient per company safety policies.
• Interpret engineering drawings and designs to implement construction plans within project scope.
• Administer and enforce QA/QC programs across civil work, confirming earthworks and grading are performed correctly.
• Direct haul road construction, subgrade preparation for foundations, and ground prep for crane pads.
• Oversee final grade development and excavation for underground utilities and water lines, including culverts.
• Organize contractor daily tasks with manpower and resource loading across multiple fronts.
• Monitor progress against schedule and budget, communicating risks to project leadership.
