Job summary

JAM Recruitment Ltd is seeking an experienced Ship Fitter / Fabricator for a key role based in Govan, Glasgow. You will support fabrication, assembly, installation and outfitting of large steel structures within a marine and heavy engineering environment, delivering high-quality workmanship with a strong emphasis on safety.

You will read engineering drawings, assemble decks and shell sections, operate fabrication equipment, and work with supervisors and trades to resolve production challenges

Qualifications

  • Experience with fabrication and installation of steel structures.
  • Familiarity with reading engineering drawings and specs.
  • SHE induction and safety certifications are required.

Responsibilities

  • Mark off and prepare materials in line with drawings and specs.
  • Assemble and install steel structures, decks, bulkheads, frames, and shell sections.
  • Fit, align, and fair steelwork using appropriate tools.
  • Fabricate and install structural and outfitting components such as platforms, ladders, flooring, and doors.
  • Operate fabrication machinery (rolling, flanging, cutting, drilling).
  • Carry out plate prep, grinding, cutting, pressure testing and fitting.
  • Support launch, docking, commissioning and testing activities.
  • Collaborate with supervisors and other trades to resolve production challenges.
  • Assist in mentoring apprentices and sharing trade knowledge.

Job description

Ship Fitter - Govan

We are seeking an experienced Ship Fitter / Fabricator to support the fabrication, assembly, installation, and outfitting of large steel structures within a marine and heavy engineering environment. The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering high-quality products while maintaining the highest standards of safety and workmanship.

Key Responsibilities
  • Mark off and prepare materials in line with engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Assemble and install steel structures, including decks, bulkheads, frames, longitudinals, and shell sections.
  • Fit, align, and fair steelwork using appropriate tools and techniques.
  • Fabricate and install structural and outfitting components such as access platforms, ladders, flooring systems, hatches, doors, and equipment supports.
  • Operate fabrication machinery, including rolling, flanging, cutting, and drilling equipment.
  • Carry out plate preparation, grinding, cutting, pressure testing, and fitting activities.
  • Support launch, docking, commissioning, and testing activities as required.
  • Work collaboratively with supervisors and other trades to resolve practical production challenges.
  • Assist in mentoring apprentices and sharing trade knowledge.
Knowledge & Skills
  • Good understanding of fabrication and installation drawings.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing and assembly processes within a heavy engineering environment.
  • Strong awareness of Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE) requirements.
  • Good knowledge of ship fitting, structural assembly, or a related trade.
  • Understanding of quality standards and work tolerances.
  • Strong practical hand skills for fabrication and assembly activities.
  • Effective communication, coaching, and problem-solving abilities.
Qualifications
  • Recognised trade papers, apprenticeship, or equivalent qualification.
  • Relevant safety certifications, including SHE induction, COSHH awareness, Working at Height, or equivalent
