Job summary

Darlington Middle School is hiring an Exceptional Education Shadow to support students with special needs in a general education setting. The role is 183 days and involves assisting with instruction, behavior monitoring, and data collection to inform IEP goals.

Requirements include 60 college credits (or an associate degree or high school diploma with Ready to Work credentials) and qualifying assessments (WIN or Work Keys/ParaPro).

Qualifications

  • Minimum of sixty (60) academic credit hours from an accredited institution of higher education.
  • An associate degree (or higher)
  • Item (1) High School Diploma or the equivalent
  • AND Item (2) Ready to Work Credentials
  • Alternatives to the above qualifications may be deemed appropriate by the Board

Responsibilities

  • Acts as a mandated reporter for student safety.
  • Adapts activities and materials to support IEP goals.
  • Administers tests, homework, and make-up work to support student needs.
  • Assists students with personal care and transitions as needed.
  • Communicates progress with supervising staff and health professionals.
  • Escorts students to ensure safe arrivals and departures.
  • Implements interventions under supervision to reinforce learning concepts.
  • Monitors daily schedule and behavior plans to maintain a safe environment.
  • Provides instruction under supervision to reinforce instructional objectives and ensure access to least restrictive environment.
  • Supervises students in various settings to ensure safety.
  • Participates in emergencies drills and actual emergencies to maintain safety.
  • Collects data on IEP goals for records and informed decisions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Salary: $20,159 base salary (based on education and experience)

Available: 2026-2027 School Year

Qualifications

  • Work Keys - Copy of passing scores on three areas of Work Keys AssessmentApplied Mathematics (4), Reading for Information (4), Writing (4) or ParaPro - Copy of passing score (minimum 456) on ParaPro, the state approved academic assessment

Job Goal

To assist the teacher with supervision, care, and instruction of students with special needs in the general education setting; assisting in implementing plans for instruction; monitoring student behavior; and providing information to appropriate school personnel.

Performance Responsibilities
  • Acts as a mandated reporter for the purpose of ensuring the safety of the students.
  • Adapts classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher for the purpose of supporting and reinforcing classroom objectives and meeting IEP goals.
  • Administers tests, homework, make-up work, etc. for the purpose of supporting student needs in the classroom.
  • Assists students (e.g. diapering, lifting, transitioning from desk to wheel chair etc.) for the purpose of attending to the student's personal hygiene and care needs.
  • Attends meetings and in-service presentations for the purpose of acquiring and/or conveying information relative to job functions.
  • Communicates with supervising instructional staff, and a variety of health care professionals, and professional support personnel for the purpose of communicating progress or implementing IEP objectives.
  • Escorts student (e.g. bathroom, classroom, community, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and safe arrival to and/or from a destination.
  • Implements, under the supervision of assigned teacher, research based interventions for the purpose of presenting and/or reinforcing learning concepts.
  • Intervenes in potential conflicts utilizing appropriate physical and/or therapeutic approaches for the purpose of diffusing confrontations and minimizing disruptions.
  • Monitors student's daily schedule and behavior plan for the purpose of maintaining a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Provides, under the supervision of assigned teacher, instruction to the student in a variety of individual and group activities for the purpose of reinforcing instructional objectives; implementing IEP plans; and ensuring the student's access to his/her least restrictive environment.
  • Supervises individual and/or groups of students in a variety of settings (e.g. community field trips, hallways, bus loading areas, cafeteria, parking lots, classrooms, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Supervises and escorts the student during any and all emergency drills or during actual emergencies for the purpose of providing a safe learning environment.
  • Collects data on the student's IEP goals for the purpose of maintaining accurate records and engaging in data based decision making.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
