RSK Group’s RSK Response unit in Scotland is seeking an Environmental Technician to join our 24/7 environmental incident response team. The role is full-time and based in Scotland, with training provided to develop practical field skills.

The successful candidate will enjoy opportunities to learn across contaminated land, sampling, remediation and waste management, while working safely in high-hazard environments. Travel throughout Scotland is expected.

The Vacancy

RSK Response is a growing business unit within the RSK Group that specialises in the provision of 24/7 environmental incident response, inspection, and maintenance services.

We currently have exciting opportunities for an Environmental Technician to join our growing team in Scotland, UK. This is a full-time, permanent position.

We are looking for a practical and motivated individual who is interested in developing a career in the environmental industry. The role would suit an environmental graduate looking to develop practical field experience, an early-career environmental professional, or an individual from a practical site-based background who is keen to develop their environmental knowledge.

Previous environmental incident response experience is not essential, as training and development will be provided. A willingness to learn, strong work ethic and genuine interest in practical site-based environmental work are key to the role.

Responsibilities:

• Rapid response to environmental incidents in a variety of urban, rural and island settings.
• Assist with the assessment of pollution risks and, with appropriate training and supervision, apply a range of techniques for containing, recovering and remediating oils and other contaminants.
• Environmental monitoring and sampling activities.
• Inspection and maintenance of oil storage areas, electrical transformer bunds, oil-water separators, interceptors and associated infrastructure.
• Decontamination and specialist cleaning activities.
• Drainage and utilities inspection.
• Development of and adherence to site-specific and point-of-work health & safety risk assessments.
• Working safely within electrical substations and other high-hazard environments following appropriate training and authorisation.
• Liaison with clients, contractors and the wider RSK Response team, including technical and managerial support, while developing the confidence and technical knowledge required to support appropriate responses to environmental incidents and projects.
• Develop the ability to take ownership of allocated tasks and projects, including planning work, maintaining project records, progressing agreed actions and communicating progress to the wider project team.
• Develop effective information management, technical letter and report writing skills.
• Waste management and Duty of Care responsibilities.
• Maintenance of equipment and vehicles.
• Stock management.

Additional information:

• We operate a 24/7 environmental incident response service. Following appropriate training and competency assessment, you will be required to participate in the on-call rota, for which standby and overtime payments are provided.
• Excellent time management, organisational and communication skills are essential.
• Regular travel will be required throughout Scotland including the islands, with occasional travel to other areas of the UK.
• Occasional overnight stays away from home will be required.
• Full environmental incident response training will be provided, alongside ongoing technical, health & safety and professional development opportunities.
• Opportunities available for collaborative working with other Response and Remediation businesses with the RSK Group.

Qualifications and Experience:

Essential

• A full, clean UK driving license.
• Good basic IT and administrative skills, including experience using Microsoft Office. Candidates must be comfortable producing written documentation, maintaining organised electronic project records and learning internal project management systems.
• Good written and verbal communication skills.
• Willingness to undertake practical and physical outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
• Willingness to travel throughout Scotland, stay away occasionally and participate in the on-call rota following appropriate training.
• Ability to work safely, follow procedures and recognise when advice or assistance is required.
• Good organisational skills and attention to detail.

Desirable

• BSc/HND/HNC or similar qualification in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Geology, Geography, Chemistry or another relevant discipline.
• Previous practical or site-based work experience, including placements, summer employment or similar.
• Environmental sampling, contaminated land, waste, spill response or remediation experience.
• Utilities, civils, construction, drainage or waste industry experience.
• Basic project management experience.
• Experience or certification operating excavators, dumpers or similar plant.
• CSCS or equivalent site safety certification.
• First Aid qualification.

Salary & Benefits

• £28,000 - £30,000 with standby and overtime payments where appropriate
