Sunderland City Council is seeking a Senior Environmental Services Technician for its Waste and Recycling Service. This role involves physically demanding outdoor work, ensuring efficient waste collection across the city. Working towards Sunderland City Plan 2035, we are committed to keeping our city clean and green around the clock. As a Senior Environmental Services Technician, within our Waste and recycling Service, you can contribute to the safe and efficient collection of waste and recycling across Sunderland.
The job can be physically demanding, working outdoors, and in all weather conditions. You will work in a team which includes a driver and usually one other loader. The range of duties will include the door-to-door collection and emptying of general household and recycling waste into the refuse vehicle, identifying contaminated waste within the recycling waste stream and removing bulky items from the perimeter of residential properties across the City. Frequent lifting and carrying moderately heavy items will be required on a daily basis. Full PPE and training will be provided.
Applicants should have good communication skills and the ability to follow instructions, policies, procedures and legislation to carry out duties compliantly. You may be required to work from any of the 4 Council depots in Hendon, South Hylton, Houghton Le Spring or Washington.
This is a permanent variable hour's contract which means that should you be successful, opportunities to work may vary in hours, each week/month. You will have the same rights as other council workers, but you will have the flexibility to accept work when you are available. Please refer to the attached FAQ document for more detailed information.
Applicants should be prepared to work any day of the week (Monday – Sunday) and have the flexibility to respond if called upon at short notice. You may also be required to work Bank/Public holidays, as well as between Christmas and New Year when required by the service and appropriate to the post
