Job description
Overview

We are seeking an enthusiastic and committed English teacher to join our dynamic and supportive department of Sustainable Technology and Motor Vehicle. You will be delivering high-quality GCSE English and Functional Skills lessons to learners across Motor Vehicle, Accident Repair, and Engineering pathways. This role offers a unique opportunity to teach in a vocational context, supporting learners who are working towards technical qualifications while developing essential literacy and communication skills. You will work as part of a small, collaborative English and maths team embedded within the wider STMV department, helping to ensure learners make strong progress and are well prepared for their next steps. The ideal candidate will have a passion for engaging learners, particularly those who may not have previously thrived in English, and a strong commitment to inclusive, learner-centred teaching.

What You Will Do
  • Plan, prepare, and deliver high-quality teaching, learning and assessment for GCSE English and Functional Skills, in line with awarding body requirements.
  • Develop engaging schemes of learning, session plans, and teaching resources tailored to vocational learners in Motor Vehicle, Accident Repair, and Engineering.
  • Set and review individual SMART learning targets linked to learners’ study programmes, and track and record progress effectively.
  • Motivate, inspire, and support learners to achieve their potential, with a focus on improving confidence and attainment in English.
  • Apply a range of inclusive teaching strategies and adapt delivery to meet diverse learner needs, including through the use of digital tools and technology.
  • Maintain up-to-date subject knowledge and apply evidence-informed practice to continuously enhance teaching and learning.
  • Contribute to curriculum planning, quality processes, and collaborative work within the English and maths team and the wider STMV department.
About You
  • Hold a Level 5 teaching qualification (e.g. Cert Ed, PGCE) or be working towards one.
  • Possess a relevant degree or subject-specialist qualification in English.
  • Have up-to-date knowledge of the GCSE English curriculum and/or Functional Skills frameworks.
  • Demonstrate recent teaching experience in the FE or secondary education sector, including delivering to mixed-ability groups.
  • Experience of motivating and supporting learners who may have barriers to learning or who previously underachieved in English.
  • Skilled in using active learning strategies and differentiated approaches to engage vocational learners.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with students, parents/carers, and colleagues.
  • Well-organised, reflective, and committed to continuous professional development.
