Job summary

Softcat is seeking an Engineering Technical Lead to empower the internal technology squad and drive high-quality production code in a hybrid UK team. You will help shape architecture and coding practices while mentoring junior engineers to deliver consistently.

The role emphasizes building standards, guiding architectural decisions, and fostering engineering excellence in an Agile environment using .NET Core, C#, SQL, Azure/AWS, and Git.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of hands-on software development experience at Senior Engineer or Technical Lead level.
• Strong experience with .NET Core, C#, and SQL.
• Experience designing distributed systems and modern architectures.
• Comfortable in Agile/squad-based environments and influencing delivery.

Responsibilities

• Lead from the codebase, delivering high-quality production code and refactoring as needed.

The successful candidate for this role will be responsible for raising the capability of the whole squad, particularly by supporting and developing junior engineers. You will be responsible for ensuring that the team can deliver effectively, by helping the team break down work, remove blockers, and deliver consistently.

As Engineering Technical Lead, you'll be responsible for:

• Help us to build standards and drive a whole team approach to quality
• Lead from the codebase: contributing high-quality production code, refactoring where necessary, and solving complex technical problems
• Set technical direction through architectural decisions, patterns, and pragmatic trade-offs
• Mentor engineers through pairing, code reviews, and design discussions—focused on engineering excellence, not performance management

We'd love you to have

• 7+ years of hands‑on software development experience, operating at Senior Engineer or Technical Lead level
• Strong commercial experience with .NET Core, C#, and SQL
• Proven ability to design and reason about distributed systems and modern application architectures
• Comfortable working in Agile / squad-based environments, influencing delivery without formal authority
• Solid experience with cloud platforms (Azure and/or AWS) and version control (Git)
