Job summary

National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED) is seeking a field-based operator to install, commission and maintain complex protection and automation systems across its regional network. You will handle fault location, safety documentation, and customer coordination while supporting team objectives.

The role requires a full UK driving licence, willingness to travel within the Gloucester area and flexibility to take on additional duties to meet operational needs.

Responsibilities

  • Install and commission complex schemes on the network and at sites.
  • Install, commission and maintain protection and automation systems.
  • Location and restoration of complex faults.
  • Develop fault location and testing equipment usage.
  • Advise on innovations in electricity network management and automation.
  • Identify training needs and provide training on automation.
  • Carry out examining officer duties as required.
  • Train staff on operating automatic systems.
  • Manage network operations and issue safety documents up to 33kV.
  • Determine requirements and plan how work will be carried out.
  • Issue planned shutdown notices and coordinate with customers.
  • Exercise leadership and seek assistance when needed.
  • Adapt short-term plans to changing circumstances.
  • Assist with assessment and authorisation of operational staff.

About Us

We're National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED ), the owner and operator behind the electricity distribution systems for the Midlands, the Southwest of England and South Wales. Main Responsibilities
  • Installation and commissioning of complex schemes on the network and at operational sites.
  • Install, commission and maintain complex protection and/or automation systems.
  • Location and restoration of complex faults.
  • Development in the use of fault location and protection testing equipment.
  • Advise own and other team members on innovations in electricity network management and automation.
  • Identify training needs of own and other team members and provide training as necessary on automation.
  • Carry out examining officer duties as required.
  • Train appropriate staff on the operational aspects of automatic systems.
  • Carry out network operations including the issue of all safety documents up to 33kV.
  • Determine what is required and how the work will be carried out.
  • Issue planned shutdown notices, make appointments with customers.
  • Exercise leadership.
  • Request assistance when outside capability or authority.
  • Alter own short-term programme to meet changes in circumstances, within constraints.
  • Assisting with the assessment and authorisation of operational staff.
The Ideal Candidate
  • Operationally we require you to live within approximately 40 minutes of the Gloucester depot - postcode is GL4 3BHA.
  • Full UK/EU Driving Licence is required for this role as you will need to be mobile throughout the area and may be asked to undertake standby duties.
  • A flexible outlook is essential as you may be asked to undertake other duties to assist the team in meeting its objectives.
