Job summary

National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED) in Hinckley is seeking a Project Engineer to lead major project delivery across 33/132kV networks. The role focuses on safety, project governance and cross-disciplinary execution, with SAP duties and ongoing plant support.

You will work in a fast-paced environment, manage multiple schemes, and collaborate with procurement and site teams to meet milestones and standards.

Qualifications

  • Experience with protection and control systems and commissioning equipment.
  • Current SAP status with operational authorisation up to 132kV.
  • Background in a DNO/iDNO/ICP environment.
  • Strong commitment to health, safety and quality standards.
  • Ability to work autonomously with high level of self-motivation.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and control project work across plant, overhead and underground systems.
  • Ensure project safety and CDM 2015 compliance.
  • Forecast and deliver construction and financial milestones.
  • Manage project risks and supplier performance.
  • Perform SAP duties and support maintenance of existing plant and equipment.
  • Procurement and contractor management.

Job introduction

We have an exciting opportunity for a Project Engineer to join our Major Projects Capital Delivery team in Hinckley.

The Major Projects Capital Delivery team is responsible for delivering major construction, reinforcement and new connection schemes across the 33/132kV network, ensuring the safe and reliable operation of essential infrastructure.

Main responsibilities
  • As a Project Engineer, you will be responsible for the management and control of project work across plant, overhead, and underground systems. Your key responsibilities include:
    • Ensuring project safety, with a strong focus on strict compliance with the Construction (Design & Management) regulations 2015.
    • Managing multiple projects to a recognised project management standard (APM), including forecasting and delivering construction and financial milestones.
    • Managing project related network risk.
    • Procurement and contractor management, ensuring suppliers meet safety, quality and performance expectations.
    • Carrying out Senior Authorised Person (SAP) duties.
    • Supporting the maintenance and problem solving of existing plant and equipment.
The ideal candidate

We're looking for a candidate with strong technical capability and the motivation to develop further. You should be able to demonstrate:

  • Practical knowledge of protection and control systems, including experience of commissioning equipment.
  • Current Senior Authorised Person (SAP) status with operational authorisation up to 132kV.
  • Experience working within a DNO, iDNO or ICP environment.
  • Proven background in a high-hazard industry with a strong commitment to health and safety.
  • Familiarity with plant specifications and confidence tackling technical challenges.

You will hold Level 3 City & Guilds 2339. If not already achieved, you will be required to complete either:

  • HNC Electrical and Electronic Engineering, or
  • Foundation Degree in Electrical Power Engineering.

  • Self-motivated, adaptable, and able to work with a high level of autonomy.
  • Capable of performing effectively under pressure.
  • Committed to maintaining the highest standards of quality, safety, and discipline.

The role requires mobility across the network services area and participation in standby duties according to a pre-determined rota.

Appropriate training and support will be provided to help you reach your full potential. *Depending on experience, you may initially be appointed at a lower salary until all relevant courses and training are complete.
