The Economist Group is seeking an Engineering Manager – Web to lead a team of web engineers and shape the future of economist.com. This player-coach role combines coding, architecture and people leadership to deliver fast, accessible experiences for anonymous, registered and subscribing users.

You will collaborate with Product, Design and QA to plan and implement features, with a focus on mobile web and Core Web Vitals. Hybrid working pattern applies.

Qualifications

• Proven experience as an engineering manager or technical lead.
• Hands-on background in modern web development with React/Next.js/Node.js/TypeScript.
• Able to review code, influence architecture and deliver with product teams.

Responsibilities

• Lead and grow a team of web engineers with day-to-day management and career development.
• Stay hands-on: review code, contribute to architectural decisions and implement when needed.
• Own delivery planning, sequencing work and removing blockers with product and leadership.
• Partner with Product, Design, QA and platform teams to turn roadmaps into a technically sound plan.
• Clarify requirements, identify gaps and refine specifications for build and release.
• Use metrics like registration/conversion, engagement and retention to guide priorities.
• Set engineering standards for code quality, testing, accessibility, security and release practices.
• Improve mobile web performance and Core Web Vitals across devices and networks.
• Own operational health: observability, incident response and debt reduction.
• Improve CI/CD, deployment safety and experimentation practices for frequent releases.
• Recruit, interview and onboard web engineers, fostering inclusive, collaborative culture.
• Represent team in wider engineering discussions and manage cross-team dependencies.
