Job summary

The Economist Group is seeking an Engineering Manager – Web to lead a team of web engineers and shape the future of economist.com. This player-coach role blends hands-on coding with people leadership, ensuring health, delivery and growth for the team.

Reporting to the Head of Product & Engineering – Web, you will collaborate with Product, Design and QA to deliver a fast, accessible experience for anonymous, registered and subscribing users, with emphasis on mobile web and performance.

Qualifications

• Proven experience as engineering manager or tech lead with people-management responsibility.
• Hands-on web development background with React, Next.js, Node.js and TypeScript.
• Track record shipping high-traffic, consumer-facing web products balancing tech and delivery.
• Strong mobile web fundamentals including Core Web Vitals and performance optimization.

Responsibilities

• Lead and grow a team of web engineers, providing day-to-day management and mentorship.
• Stay hands-on: review code and contribute to architecture while mentoring delivery.
• Own delivery: plan work, manage dependencies, remove blockers with product & engineering leads.
• Partner with Product, Design, QA and backend teams to turn roadmaps into plans.
