Job summary

The Economist Group is seeking a mid-level Software Engineer to join the Web team. You will contribute to a fast, intuitive web experience and collaborate across disciplines to grow our journalism platform.

Hybrid working is offered, with a remote-first policy and a minimum presence in the Birmingham office two days a month. You will join a cross-functional team of engineers, product managers and designers focused on delivering high-quality software.

Qualifications

• Experience in JavaScript and/or TypeScript.
• Production React experience.
• Web development with HTML, CSS, JS/TS.
• Experience writing automated tests.
• Understanding of web performance and accessibility.
• Experience in agile, cross-functional product teams.
• Good communication and collaboration skills.
• Willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, test and deliver software supporting our product and business goals.
• Take increasing ownership of work throughout the software development lifecycle from refinement to deployment.
• Work across React, Next.js and TypeScript applications deployed to AWS.
• Make pragmatic technical decisions and clearly communicate any trade-offs.
• Help shape and deliver our quarterly roadmap.
• Collaborate with engineers, product managers, designers and other specialists to turn ideas into deliverable work.
• Apply and help improve the team's engineering standards, tools and development practices.
• Champion performance, accessibility and quality of our applications.
