Job summary

PCI Pharma Services is seeking a Maintenance Engineering Lead to oversee on-site maintenance, ensure compliance with GMP and regulatory standards, and drive reliability across equipment and facilities. You will manage budgets, audits, audits, and supplier relationships while guiding a team of engineers and technicians toward continuous improvement.

  • Oversee budgets, CAPEX/OPEX and supplier management.
  • Lead audits, investigations and CAPAs related to maintenance operations.
  • Drive RCA and implement corrective actions for failures.
  • Manage asset care, uptime and equipment reliability.

The role

Lead and oversee the on-site Maintenance Engineering function, driving compliance, reliability, safety, team performance, and continuous improvement across site operations.

Manage maintenance strategy, budgets, projects, suppliers, assets, and regulatory requirements while partnering closely with Production, Quality, Validation, and other departments.

This is an on-site role

requiring flexible availability to support critical business needs.

General Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership and oversight to the Maintenance Engineering team, ensuring alignment with the company’s strategic goals and business plan.
  • Set and monitor departmental KPIs and performance standards.
  • Demonstrate a proactive, motivating leadership style that promotes teamwork, accountability, and professional development.
  • Ensure all maintenance activities comply with GMP, FDA, MHRA, EMA, and relevant internal/external quality and safety standards.
  • Ensure that all equipment and facilities are maintained, calibrated, and re-qualified in line with the Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) programme and regulatory expectations.
  • Support and lead audits, investigations, and CAPAs (DRs, CCRs) relevant to maintenance operations.
  • Manage and continuously improve asset care and maintenance strategies to optimise uptime and equipment reliability.
  • Drive root cause analysis (RCA) and implement corrective actions for repeat failures and reliability issues.
  • Oversee tooling, spares, and critical equipment availability and lifecycle planning.
  • Manage departmental budgets including OPEX and CAPEX planning, forecasting, and cost control.
  • Provide regular reports on forecasted and actual expenditure, aligned with the site financial plan.
  • Establish and manage service contracts, technical agreements, and vendor relationships.
  • Oversee all HR processes for team members including attendance, sickness, overtime, annual leave, absence, 1:1s, appraisals, probation reviews, and PMRs.
  • Address team performance and absence issues through coaching, support, and formal measures as appropriate.
  • Promote team engagement, development, and succession planning.
  • Ensure that all maintenance staff are trained and competent to carry out their roles safely and compliantly.
  • Identify team and individual development needs and work with HR to implement training plans and budgets.
  • Foster a culture of learning, growth, and technical excellence across the department.
  • Provide technical input into engineering projects and capital expenditure initiatives aligned with the site development plan.
  • Assist other departments in the selection, validation, and implementation of new equipment and systems.
  • Support the introduction of new technologies and products by ensuring maintenance readiness and adaptability.
  • Ensure that all maintenance activities comply with Penn’s Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) policies, as well as relevant UK and global standards.
  • Support HSE Executive Committees and actively promote a safe working environment.
  • Adhere to guidelines set out in the PPSL Environmental Policy and encourage sustainable maintenance practices.
  • Work closely with production, quality, validation, and other site departments to ensure seamless operation and support.
  • Champion best engineering and maintenance practices through innovation, data analysis, and continuous improvement.
  • Provide support to other areas of the business as needed, based on expertise and at the discretion of the department head.
  • Support out-of-hours response to site alarms and emergencies as required.
  • Maintain flexible availability to support critical business needs during evenings, weekends, or shutdowns.
  • Ensure resource allocation to client work is accurately documented and reported through approved systems.
