Job summary

FirstGroup plc in Sheffield is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead our Olive Grove Depot workshop and oversee day-to-day engineering operations, ensuring safety, reliability, and cost-effective performance for a busy transport fleet.

The role requires strong leadership, budget control, and a proven track record in vehicle maintenance regulations; you will drive continuous improvement, manage subcontractors, and coordinate with senior management to uphold high safety and quality standards.

Qualifications

• Experience in engineering management or supervision.
• NVQ Level 3 in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
• Knowledge of vehicle maintenance legislation (VOSA, MOT, safety inspections).
• Strong leadership and people development skills.
• Proficient IT skills including SAP and MS Office.
• Full PCV and/or forklift license desirable.

Responsibilities

• Lead, motivate, and support a team of engineering professionals.
• Oversee the depot and engineering workshop operations.
• Ensure compliance with Health, Safety, Environmental and engineering policies.
• Monitor and control departmental budgets and costs.
• Drive performance to minimise vehicle downtime and lost mileage.
• Conduct staff training, performance reviews, and development planning.
• Ensure compliance with statutory vehicle maintenance requirements and quality standards.
• Maintain communication with senior management and cross-functional teams.
• Develop and implement engineering processes and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Manage subcontracted engineering work and contractor performance.
