Job summary

SugarCRM in Hull seeks an Engineering Manager to lead and develop a software engineering team through a period of change. This role focuses on rebuilding culture, setting a clear technical direction, and driving an AI-first engineering approach while guiding multidisciplinary engineers across frontend, backend, data, and QA.

You will establish operating rhythms, uphold engineering standards, and partner with product to ensure delivery aligns with business priorities.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of direct engineering management experience
• Strong communication across technical and non-technical stakeholders
• Strong technical credibility with a software engineering background
• Clear point of view on the future of software engineering including AI-first development
• Proven experience leading teams through significant change (merger/acquisition/turnaround)
• Fluency in engineering metrics and delivery operations (velocity, cycle time, throughput)
• Experience introducing generative AI tooling into an engineering team
• Track record of moving teams from siloed to cross-functional, multidisciplinary delivery
• Measurable outcomes in team health and delivery effectiveness

Responsibilities

• Lead, coach, and develop a software engineering team with structured one-to-ones and career planning
• Rebuild culture, establish psychological safety, accountability and continuous improvement
• Own delivery by implementing operating rhythms, remove blockers, and improve sprint health with metrics
• Set and enforce engineering standards for code quality, testing, reliability, and maintainability
• Lead AI-first adoption and integration of generative AI tooling into workflows
• Develop multidisciplinary engineers by breaking down silos across frontend, backend, data, and QA
• Collaborate with product and stakeholders to align engineering with business priorities and communicate risks and trade-offs
