Job summary

AECOM is seeking a Senior Geotechnical Engineer in St Albans to lead ground engineering design and project delivery. You will engage clients, mentor junior staff, and work on diverse infrastructure projects across the UK and Ireland, with a flexible hybrid work model.

Ideal candidates bring Chartered status or progress toward it, strong UK ground condition knowledge, and proficiency in geotechnical software. This role requires travel across the UK as needed.

Qualifications

  • Degree in civil/geotech engineering or equivalent and chartered status or on track.
  • Experience delivering geotechnical design for infrastructure projects.
  • Strong written and verbal communication; client interaction experience.

Responsibilities

  • Lead geotechnical design and ground investigation from desk study to final design.
  • Own day-to-day project delivery including budget and programme adherence.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to professional growth.
  • Develop fee proposals and bids while maintaining client satisfaction.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and interpret UK ground conditions.
  • Ensure safety considerations and CDM compliance in design.

Job description

Senior Geotechnical Engineer – Ground Engineering (St Albans)

We are seeking a Senior Geotechnical Engineer to join our Ground Engineering team in the St Albans office. The role involves leading geotechnical design, project delivery, client engagement, and mentoring junior staff on diverse infrastructure projects across the UK and Ireland.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver technical design and ground investigation for projects from desk study to final design, including specifications, interpretive reports, construction drawings, and design reports.
  • Own day‑to‑day project delivery, ensuring technical quality, budget, and programme adherence.
  • Provide technical input during client and team reviews, preparing alternative solutions and making informed decisions.
  • Develop fee proposals and bids, maintaining high client satisfaction.
  • Mentor and develop junior engineers and support their professional growth.
  • Manage project budgets and schedules, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, and interpret UK ground conditions.
Qualifications & Experience
  • BEng/MEng in Civil Engineering or BSc/MSc in Geotechnical Engineering.
  • Chartered Engineering status (IEng/CEng) preferred or on track to achieve within one year.
  • Strong knowledge of UK ground conditions, investigation practices, and design codes.
  • Experience with geotechnical design of earthworks, foundations, retaining structures, and slope stabilization.
  • Familiarity with software such as Slope/W, Wallap, gINT, Open Ground.
  • Ability to produce design packages, risk assessments, specifications, and reports.
  • Understanding of CDM Regulations and safety in design.
  • Experience in specialised sectors such as rail, highways, or defence is desirable.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, with presentation skills.
  • Clean driving licence and willingness to travel throughout the UK.
