Job summary

AECOM’s Ground Engineering Practice seeks a Senior Geotechnical Engineer / Senior Engineering Geologist for its Belfast office. You will lead geotechnical delivery across Ireland and the UK from feasibility to final design, coordinating desk studies, investigations, and design reports.

You will mentor junior staff, drive technical quality and project budgets, and contribute to bids and client relationships. Hybrid working and travel across Ireland are expected.

Qualifications

• Degree-qualified in civil/geotechnical disciplines with relevant study.
• Professional registration or on-track (IEng/CEng or CGeol) preferred.
• Strong knowledge of UK/Irish ground conditions and interpretation practices.
• Familiarity with Eurocode and Irish/UK standards.
• Experience in geotechnical design and use of design software.

About the Role

AECOM’s Ground Engineering Practice seeks an experienced Senior Geotechnical Engineer / Senior Engineering Geologist for its Belfast office. The role involves leading geotechnical delivery for projects across the island of Ireland and the UK, from feasibility to final design.

Responsibilities

• Prepare, check and review geotechnical documents, including desk studies, interpretative reports, specifications, construction drawings and design reports.
• Provide active input in technical review meetings, own decisions and propose alternative concepts; prepare bids and proposals.
• Mentor junior staff, owning both personal and professional development.
• Take day‑to‑day responsibility for project delivery, ensuring technical quality, budget and programme control.
• Lead the geotechnical input from desk study/feasibility through investigation and interpretation to final design.

Requirements and Qualifications

• BEng / MEng in Civil Engineering, BSc / MSc in Geology, Engineering Geology, Earth Science, or MSc in Geotechnical Engineering.
• Chartered Engineer (IEng/CEng) or Geologist (CGeol) status preferred or on track to achieve within the next year.
• Strong knowledge of UK and Irish ground conditions and investigation practices.
• Familiarity with typical ground condition interpretation/parametric assessment and correlation methods.
• Experience in geotechnical design (earthworks, foundations, retaining structures, slope stabilisation) and use of design software (Slope/W, Wallap).
• Knowledge of relevant Eurocode, British and Irish Standards.
• Understanding of CDM Regulations / Safety in Design.
• Experience with standards in highways, railways desirable.
• Commercial management experience and client relationship building.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Clean driving licence.
• Willingness to travel within Ireland and occasionally the UK.

Travel and Location

Belfast, AECOM Office, with frequent travel across Ireland and occasional UK visits.
