Job summary

AECOM UK & Ireland Ground Engineering Practice in Belfast is hiring a Senior Geotechnical Engineer / Senior Engineering Geologist for either full‑time or part‑time work. You will lead engineering teams and help shape ground engineering across energy, water, defence, highway and railway sectors.

The role involves delivering geotechnical documents, providing technical input in client reviews, and mentoring junior staff. Frequent travel within Ireland and occasionally the UK is expected.

Qualifications

  • BEng/MEng in Civil Engineering, BSc/MSc in Geology, Engineering Geology or Earth Science, or MSc in Geotechnical Engineering/Engineering Geology.
  • Chartered Engineer (IEng/CEng) or Geologist (CGeol) status preferred or on track to achieve within one year.
  • Strong knowledge of UK and Irish ground conditions and investigation practices.
  • Experience with typical ground conditions interpretation/parametric assessment and correlation methods for common geotechnical design problems.
  • Familiarity with data management software (e.g., OpenGround) advantageous.
  • Well‑rounded experience in geotechnical design (earthworks, foundations, retaining structures, slope stabilisation) with strong analytical skills and competence in relevant design software (e.g., Slope/W, Wallap).
  • Experience producing geotechnical analysis and design packages, including drawings, risk assessments, specifications and design reports.
  • Good knowledge of relevant Eurocode, British and Irish standards.
  • Application of CDM Regulations / Safety in Design in a design and ground investigation environment.
  • Experience or familiarity with standards and processes in specialised fields (highways, railways) desirable.
  • Experience and understanding of the consultancy and design markets, client relationship building, work planning and commercial management.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to produce clear technical reports and deliver confident presentations.
  • Clean driving licence.
  • Willingness to travel throughout Ireland and occasionally within the UK.

Job Overview

AECOM UK & Ireland Ground Engineering Practice is hiring a Senior Geotechnical Engineer / Senior Engineering Geologist for our Belfast office, full‑time or part‑time. The role leads engineering teams and shapes the future of ground engineering across energy, water, defence, highway and railway sectors.

We also support projects across the UK and internationally, working with frameworks such as the Department for Infrastructure (DfI), Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) and Northen Ireland Water.
