Job summary

Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council is seeking an experienced Engineering Design Manager to lead its civil and structural design teams, driving infrastructure improvements in a public sector setting.

You will provide technical leadership, manage a multidisciplinary team, and oversee design delivery, ensuring alignment with standards, budgets and governance processes. The role supports major highways and regeneration projects in the borough.

Qualifications

• Background in construction and strong understanding of day-to-day operation of an engineering design team.
• Knowledge of relevant design standards.
• Understanding of local authority processes, governance and public sector decision-making.
• Proven track record in programme, project and contractual management.
• Awareness of commercial practices within a construction environment.
• Strong leadership and team development skills.
• Empathy, professionalism and collaborative approach.

Responsibilities

• Lead and support civil and structural engineering design teams.
• Act as focal point for delivery and coordination of design services.
• Provide technical leadership and support across the team.
• Deliver design and project management expertise in a consultancy capacity to Engineering Services and other internal council clients.
• Identify and manage external funding opportunities and bid processes.
• Oversee performance and development of the design team.
