Job description

At FM Conway, our Senior Engineers play a key role in keeping London's infrastructure safe, resilient and fit for the future. Combining technical expertise with practical problem‑solving, you'll help deliver engineering solutions across a range of highway structures and maintenance schemes.

We're looking for an experienced Senior Engineer to join our Structures Business Unit, working within our Maintenance and Schemes team. Based at our Paddington office, you'll support structural maintenance programmes across Westminster City Council, the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea and the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham, with opportunities to support other Local Authorities and TfL.

This is a varied role covering structural inspections, assessments, design, technical approvals and providing engineering advice on urgent structural issues.

As our Senior Engineer, you will:
  • Support the delivery of structural maintenance programmes across our Structures team
  • Plan and deliver General Inspections (GI) and Principal Inspections (PI) of highway structures, including bridges, underpasses, footbridges, retaining walls, river walls, pipe subways and pedestrian subways.
  • Produce annual inspection programmes and cost plans for Local Authority clients.
  • Complete inspections and record findings using BridgeStation, in line with London Bridge Engineering Group (LoBEG) specifications.
  • Respond to Urgent Structure Advice (USA) requirements, investigating incidents such as vehicle strikes, structural damage and carriageway collapses.
  • Produce technical investigation reports and recommend suitable repair or reinstatement options, including costs.
  • Investigate damage to basement vaults supporting public highways and provide technical advice.
  • Assess abnormal load applications against highway structure capacities and advise on alternative routes where required.
  • Undertake non-complex structural design for highway improvement schemes, including signposts, foundations, lighting columns and basement vault sub-structures.
  • Produce Bills of Quantities and bar bending schedules where required.
  • Administer Technical Approval (TA) applications in line with highway structures requirements.
  • Meet with clients to discuss programmes, costs, technical issues and project requirements.
  • Prepare monthly contract reports and work with Operations Managers on costs, forecasts and profit and loss.
  • Monitor KPI targets across maintenance and scheme works.
  • Prepare accurate technical reports with minimal supervision.
  • Work with clients, operational teams and other stakeholders to resolve technical issues.
  • Support other projects and business requirements, including occasional out-of-hours and night work.

We're looking for an experienced Senior Engineer with a strong understanding of highway structures and structural maintenance, alongside experience in inspections, technical reporting and structural design.

You’ll ideally have worked within structural maintenance programmes and the public sector, with experience of construction projects and structural design involving reinforced concrete, steel structures and foundations.

You’ll also bring:
  • A BEng in Civil Engineering or equivalent.
  • CEng membership of ICE or IStructE, or be working towards professional membership such as MICE or MIStructE.
  • Experience working with Local Authority structural maintenance regimes.
  • Knowledge of Eurocodes.
  • Experience using BridgeStation, or the ability to learn the system through training.
  • Competence in AutoCAD and strong Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel and Word.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to produce clear technical reports.
  • A good understanding of health and safety, including working at height and in confined spaces where required.
  • Commercial awareness, including costs, invoicing and project performance.
  • The ability to work independently, manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
  • A collaborative approach to working with clients, colleagues and stakeholders.
  • A full UK driving licence, as travel to FM Conway and customer locations is required.

At FM Conway, your expertise can make a genuine difference to the infrastructure around us. You'll have opportunities to develop your technical skills, gain experience across a range of structures and progress your career alongside experienced engineering and operational teams.

Alongside a competitive salary, you’ll receive:
