Job summary

Progeny (United Kingdom) is seeking a Payroll Assistant to join the Finance Department on a fixed-term maternity cover contract in Leeds. You will manage end-to-end payroll processing for multiple monthly runs, ensuring accurate, timely payments and HMRC compliance.

The role requires strong Payroll lifecycle experience, attention to detail, and proficiency with Excel (VLOOKUPs, pivots). You will support pension administration, year-end tasks, and TUPE integrations as acquisitions come on board.

Qualifications

• 3 years plus experience in a payroll role with strong understanding of payroll processes & legislation; end-to-end payroll experience.
• Understanding of payroll regulations, tax, and PAYE.
• Understanding of pension administration.
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
• Excellent organisational and time management skills.
• Effective written and verbal communication.
• Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel (VLOOKUP, pivot tables & basic formulas).
• Desirable: CIPP or working towards certification.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and process monthly payroll runs on time.
• Calculate and process payments, amendments, deductions, holiday pay, and statutory payments.
• Administer new starters, leavers, payrolling benefits, statutory leave and pay (SSP, SMP, SPP).
• Act as a primary point of contact for payroll queries with Payroll Manager.
• Resolve queries promptly and professionally.
• Prepare standard and ad-hoc payroll reports for management.
• Reconciling payroll reports accurately.
• Assist in pension administration and contributions.
• Support year-end routines including distribution of P60s.
• Ensure statutory compliance and convergence with regulatory requirements.
• Collaborate with wider finance team on payroll and staff benefits tasks.
• Assist with other finance tasks and continuous improvement of payroll operations.
• Document payroll processes and controls; contribute to TUPE integrations for acquisitions.
