Job summary

Associated British Ports (ABP) in Southampton is recruiting a hands-on Electronics Team Leader to manage a small team and deliver maintenance across radar, VHF radio, CCTV and X-ray assets within the port estate.

You will lead from the front, providing technical direction, mentoring engineers and ensuring safety standards are upheld in a dynamic port environment. A full UK driving licence and on-call flexibility are essential.

Qualifications

  • HNC Electronics or equivalent required.
  • Ability to work at heights of 30 metres or more.
  • Full driving licence required.
  • Flexible hours to include on-call duties.
  • Experience supervising or managing a team preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership for electronics systems including radar, VHF radios and CCTV.
  • Manage a 3-person electronics team on a hands-on shift basis.
  • Oversee maintenance tasks, inspections and documentation across the port estate.
  • Mentor engineers and apprentices, ensuring safe systems of work.

Following a realignment of responsibilities of our team leads within the Engineering department in Southampton, we’re looking to recruit a hands-on Electronics Team Leader to manage a team of 3. Whether looking after the radar equipment, our VHF Radio systems, vast CCTV network or ensuring the X-Ray equipment in our cruise terminals, the role will provide you with a unique asset base to maintain. You’ll take on full line management responsibility for the team, as well as contributing to delivering on-time planned and reactive maintenance across our Port estate.

Based from our Port Of Southampton, you will need to hold a full UK Driving Licence to travel across the full port estate. You'll need to be comfortable working at height and over/on water. The role works regular days, but with a 1 in 4 oncall roster to provide 365 24/7 coverage to the port.

Accountabilities

Provide technical leadership for electronics systems including:

  • Radar Systems,
  • VHF Radio Systems,
  • CCTV Systems,
  • Access Control,
  • X-ray and Archway equipment,
  • Weather stations
  • Operational and port electronics systems

Ensure maintenance tasks, inspections and repairs are accurately recorded within the CMMS system and all relevant documentation is completed.

Develop, support and mentor Electronics Engineers and Apprentices, ensuring appropriate levels of supervision, training and development.

Ensure risk assessments, safe systems of work, toolbox talks and workplace inspections are completed and maintained to the required standard.

Drive quality standards through auditing completed works, identifying opportunities for improvement and implementing corrective actions where necessary.

Skills & Experience
Essential
  • HNC electronics or equivalent,
  • Ability to work at heights of 30 metres or more,
  • Full driving licence,
  • Flexible approach to working hours, to include on-call duties
  • Team supervisory or management experience (We’re happy to consider step-up candidates for individuals demonstrating the correct management behaviours.)
Ideal
  • Knowledge of Radars systems, VHF Radios, CCTV and X-Rays,
  • Software integration and coding for bespoke assets such as Tide & Weather Stations,
  • Electronics or communications knowledge,
  • PLC knowledge,
  • Understanding of Network Systems
