Job summary

National Grid Electricity Distribution in Gloucester is seeking a Network Technician to support construction, maintenance and repair of the underground and overhead network up to 66kV. You will supervise immediate work colleagues, issue safety documentation and coordinate switching operations.

Essentially you will hold a City & Guilds 2339 Level 2 or equivalent in Electrical Engineering, with 11kV switching experience and a full UK driving licence.

Qualifications

• GCSE English and Maths at grades A*-C or equivalent.
• City & Guilds 2339 Level 2 qualification in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
• Experience with LV/HV network operations and 11kV switching.
• Full UK driving licence and eligibility to work in the UK.

Responsibilities

• Operate distribution network up to 66kV, issue safety documents and manage permits.
• Construct and maintain substations, install plant and lay/joint cables up to 11kV.
• Repair and replace faulty network assets and record asset details.
• Coordinate with colleagues, plan standby rota and travel within the area.
• Ensure safe, compliant operations and accurate record-keeping.

Job Introduction

An opportunity is available for a Network Technician based at Gloucester our depot.

You will be accountable to the Operations Manager for the construction, maintenance and repair of the underground and overhead network up to 66kV. In addition, you will be responsible for the programming and monitoring of immediate work colleagues, switching up to 66kV, the issuing of appropriate safety documentation and dealing with other tasks appropriate to the Technicians role.

You are required to have grade A*-C/4-9 GCSE in English and Maths or Functional Skills Level 2 qualification in both subjects. In addition, you must hold a City & Guilds 2339 Level 2 or equivalent Level 2 qualification in Electrical Engineering.

Evidence of your qualifications will be required prior to appointment.

*Please note the successful candidate may initially be appointed at a lower salary until all relevant courses and training are complete.

Main Responsibilities

• Network operations including the issue of Limitations of Access and Permit to Work safety documents up to 66kV
• Construction of distribution substations, construction and alteration of overhead lines and associated plant. Installation of plant. Laying and jointing of cables up to 11kV.
• Repair and replacement of faulty and obsolete plant, cables and overhead lines.
• Recording asset routes, details and positions.
• Recording plant details.
• Connecting generators.

The Ideal Candidate

We're looking for a proactive, safety-focused individual with experience in electricity network operations who can work independently, make sound operational decisions, and contribute effectively within a small team. You'll be an excellent communicator, comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, and capable of managing competing priorities and tight deadlines.

Essential requirements:

• A City & Guilds 2339 Level 2 qualification, or an equivalent Level 2 qualification in Electrical Engineering.
• Working towards or experience of 11kV switching (training will be provided).
• Experience of Low Voltage (LV) and High Voltage (HV) network operations.
• A full UK/EU driving licence.
• The ability to participate in the standby rota and travel throughout the operational area.
• Residence within approximately 60 minutes of the depot location.

Ideally, you'll also have:

• A background in electricity distribution, ideally within a Craft, Technician, Engineer or similar operational role.
• Experience working within a DNO, IDNO, private network operator, or on industrial 11kV networks.
• Strong IT skills and confidence using operational and business systems.
• An awareness of project management and financial management principles.
• Knowledge of National Grid Electricity Distribution systems and processes (desirable, not essential).

• Makes confident decisions with safety at the forefront of everything you do.
• Thrives in a fast-paced operational environment and remains effective under pressure.
• Works collaboratively within a team while being capable of operating independently.
• Is committed to continuous development and willing to work towards Senior Authorised Person status if not already achieved.
• Willing to complete the Level 3 City & Guilds 2339 Power Engineering qualification if not already held.
