Job summary

AkzoNobel Ashington seeks an Electrical Maintenance Technician to sustain safety, reliability and performance of plant and equipment at the Ashington site. The role focuses on electrical safety and maintenance, with some mechanical duties as needed.

Planned preventative maintenance, safety inspections and troubleshooting form the core of the responsibilities, with training provided to expand mechanical skills and certifications.

Qualifications

• Time-served electrical maintenance technician with a recognised apprenticeship or formal technical training in an electrical discipline.
• Level 3/4 qualification in Electrical Engineering or equivalent technical qualification.
• Experience of planned preventative electrical maintenance within a manufacturing or industrial environment.
• Strong electrical maintenance, fault-finding and diagnostic skills.
• Experience carrying out routine electrical safety inspections and maintenance activities.
• Experience working within hazardous areas, including dust and gas environments.
• Compex 1–4 certification is required, or willingness to obtain the relevant certification.
• Experience using CMMS systems; SAP PM experience would be advantageous.
• Good understanding of HSE, quality and regulatory compliance requirements.
• Strong problem-solving and root cause analysis skills.
• Good IT, numeracy, organisational and analytical skills.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to work effectively alongside mechanical and electrical technicians.
• Ability to remain calm under pressure and deliver effective technical solutions in a timely manner.

Responsibilities

• Carry out routine planned, preventative and corrective electrical maintenance across the Ashington manufacturing site.
• Complete electrical safety inspections, testing and maintenance activities to ensure equipment remains safe and compliant.
• Troubleshoot, diagnose and repair electrical equipment to minimise downtime and improve equipment reliability.
• Support the mechanical maintenance team with equipment maintenance and repairs, approximately 20% of the role.
• Work safely in line with Safe Systems of Work, isolation procedures, Permit to Work requirements and point-of-work risk assessments.
• Maintain accurate maintenance records within the Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS), with SAP PM experience desirable.
• Support the development and maintenance of task lists, Standardised Work Documents and isolation/change control procedures.
• Support improvements to MTTR, MTBF and maintenance tactics through structured problem solving and continuous improvement.
• Work collaboratively with mechanical technicians and the wider maintenance team to ensure effective site support.
• Ensure statutory inspections, planned maintenance and critical work are completed safely, on time and in full.
• Participate in HSE&S, quality and sustainability activities, including risk assessments and behavioural safety observations.
• Support investigations into equipment, safety and quality issues and implement appropriate corrective actions.
• Apply 5S, Lean and continuous improvement principles to reduce waste, equipment loss and downtime.
• Participate in Tier 1 and Tier 2 MDI activities and contribute to site improvement plans.
• Maintain high standards of housekeeping, equipment condition, lubrication and basic care.
• Take ownership of personal development and maintain relevant technical knowledge and qualifications.
