Job summary

NRL is seeking an Electrical Engineer to design electrical and instrumentation systems for industrial plant solutions in Newcastle upon Tyne area. You will prepare drawings, specifications, and calculations, verify existing installations, and support brownfield upgrades with a strong safety focus.

Responsibilities include FATs/SATs, site inspections, and collaboration with mechanical engineers and subcontractors. The role requires hands-on site understanding and adherence to IEC/NEC standards.

Qualifications

• Degree or HNC/HND in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
• Design knowledge of low-voltage power, control panels and protection.
• Experience with instrumentation, PLC interfaces and control philosophy.

Responsibilities

• Produce electrical designs, layouts, schematics, specs and calculations.
• Review client specs and existing plant documentation for brownfield upgrades.

Job Description: Electrical Engineer Job Title: Electrical EngineerSector: Industrial plant solutions - power generationPurpose of the Position: The Electrical Engineer creates electrical and instrumentation system designs, prepares technical documentation for subcontractors, and develops specifications for essential purchased parts. This role requires both technical expertise and practical site understanding, including the ability to verify existing installations, interpret as-built conditions, and support brownfield upgrades safely and effectively. Electrical designs must comply with the latest standards, specifications, site constraints, and operational plant requirements.

Organizational Context: The Electrical Engineer is an integral part of a multidisciplinary project team, combining office-based design leadership with practical site engagement. The role particularly focuses on assessing, modifying, upgrading, and integrating electrical systems in brownfield contexts while ensuring safe plant operation.

Review client specifications, project requirements, and existing plant documentation.Produce electrical designs, layouts, schematics, specifications, and supporting calculations.Conduct assessments of existing installations through drawings, site surveys, and vendor information.Identify brownfield constraints and practical installation considerations.Support installation, testing, troubleshooting, and commissioning activities.Participate in activities such as Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs), Site Acceptance Tests (SATs), site inspections, and technical review

Coordination and CommunicationCollaborate with subcontractors and suppliers for seamless project execution.Identify project bottlenecks promptly and report on progress.Contribute to structured work planning around deadlines and time constraints.Coordinate with mechanical engineers to align designs.

Quality Control and EfficiencyEnsure accuracy of designs and drawings aligned with project schedules.Undertake additional training to enhance technical capabilities and site-based knowledge.Verify existing Electrical, Control & Instrumentation (EC&I) drawings and vendor information.Challenge assumptions where site information may be incomplete or outdated.

ReportingCollect, monitor, process, and analyze data for reporting purposes.Provide actionable recommendations based on reporting insights.

Travel and Site SupportVisit customer sites for HAZID, HAZOP, HAZCON, design reviews, surveys, troubleshooting, or commissioning.Actively participate in site surveys, verifying constraints such as space, cable routes, and access.Support fabricators and suppliers during quality reviews, inspections, and technical resolutions.Report and document findings, risks, and recommendations clearly.

Technical Expertise RequiredQualifications: Degree or HNC/HND in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent experience.Design Skills: Expertise in low-voltage power distribution, control panels, protection systems, cable sizing, and related calculations.Instrumentation Knowledge: Familiarity with instrumentation, PLC interfaces, interlocks, alarms, and control philosophy.Software Proficiency: Proficiency in AutoCAD, EPLAN, Inventor, or equivalent design tools.Standards Awareness: Understanding of applicable electrical standards (IEC, NEC, etc.)Practical Site and Brownfield ExperienceKnowledge of installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting.Ability to interpret drawings, verify existing setups, and account for incomplete or outdated information.Experience coordinating with live plant environments and phased works.Familiarity with safety permits, access constraints, and shutdown interfaces in brownfield projects.

Expected Working Approach The Electrical Engineer must combine strong engineering judgment with practical site considerations, ensuring that all designs meet the highest standards of safety, reliability, and applicability. Travel Requirements This role requires intermittent travel to customer sites to support project phases, including surveys, troubleshooting, and commissioning.
