Job summary

MERITUS is seeking an Electrical / Hardware Design Engineer in Stone to design control panels, PLC systems, MCCs, drives, and switchgear for critical energy and industrial projects. You will produce detailed schematics using AutoCAD Electrical and contribute across the full engineering lifecycle from concept to commissioning.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Design and develop electrical hardware solutions including control panels, PLC systems, MCCs, drives, switchgear, and low‑voltage distribution equipment.
• Produce detailed electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, cabling schedules, and containment layouts using AutoCAD Electrical.
• Support full project lifecycle from concept through commissioning and handover.
• Conduct site surveys and gather technical information to support design activities.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop robust solutions.
• Review documentation for compliance with project specs and standards.
• Support FAT/SAT and commissioning activities where required.

MERITUS are working with a leading engineering and systems integration organisation based in Stone, Staffordshire, delivering complex electrical and automation solutions across critical energy infrastructure and industrial projects.

As an Electrical / Hardware Design Engineer, you will play a key role in the design, development, and delivery of electrical control and power distribution systems supporting major energy and industrial infrastructure projects. Working within a multidisciplinary engineering team, you will be responsible for producing high-quality electrical designs that ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of critical control systems.

This is an excellent opportunity for an Electrical Design Engineer with experience in control panels, PLC systems, low-voltage distribution, MCCs, drives, and switchgear. You will gain exposure to technically challenging projects across the energy sector while supporting projects throughout the full engineering lifecycle, from concept and detailed design through to commissioning and handover.

Key Responsibilities:

• Design and develop electrical hardware solutions including control panels, PLC systems, MCCs, drives, switchgear, and low-voltage distribution equipment.
• Produce detailed electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, cabling schedules, and containment layouts using AutoCAD Electrical.
• Support full project lifecycle delivery including concept design, detailed engineering, installation, testing, commissioning, and handover.
• Conduct site surveys and gather technical information to support project design activities.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to develop robust and cost-effective technical solutions.
• Review and verify engineering documentation to ensure compliance with project specifications and industry standards.
• Support Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), and commissioning activities where required.
• Ensure all engineering activities are delivered in accordance with health, safety, environmental, and quality requirements.
• Provide technical guidance and mentoring support to junior engineers and designers.
• Support multiple projects across various stages of delivery within the energy and industrial infrastructure sectors.

Skills & Experience:

• Proven experience as an Electrical Design Engineer, Hardware Design Engineer, EC&I Engineer, or similar within industrial environments.
• Strong experience designing electrical control panels, PLC systems, MCCs, drives, switchgear, and low-voltage distribution systems.
• Proficiency with AutoCAD Electrical and associated electrical design documentation.
• Degree or HND qualified in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
• Experience working within highly regulated industries such as energy, utilities, power generation, infrastructure, process, or industrial automation.
• Strong understanding of electrical engineering standards and best practice.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to work effectively with clients, stakeholders, and project teams.
• Experience supporting projects through the full engineering lifecycle, including commissioning activities, would be advantageous.
• Previous mentoring or supervisory experience would be beneficial but is not essential.
