Job description

Electrical Design Engineer
Power Electronics & Magnetics Design
Gloucester

Are you an Electrical Engineer with experience in power electronics, transformers, inductors or magnetic component design?

Do you want to work on cutting-edge power conversion projects, developing bespoke magnetic solutions for customers across a wide range of high-growth technology sectors?

We are recruiting for a specialist engineering business that is recognised globally for its expertise in the design and manufacture of custom magnetic components used within advanced power supply applications. As part of an internationally respected engineering group, the business combines the agility of an SME with the technical support and resources of a global organisation.

This is a rare opportunity to develop specialist expertise in high-frequency magnetics whilst working alongside some of the most experienced engineers in the field.

The Role

Working as part of a small, highly collaborative engineering team, you will be involved in the full product development lifecycle, from customer requirements and concept design through to simulation, prototyping, testing and manufacture.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Designing transformers, inductors, chokes and other magnetic components for power conversion applications
  • Supporting the development of solutions for switch mode power supplies, DC-DC converters, AC-DC converters and resonant converter technologies
  • Performing electrical, magnetic and thermal calculations
  • Producing technical documentation, specifications and design reports
  • Supporting prototype builds, testing and validation activities
  • Using simulation and modelling tools to optimise product performance
  • Working closely with manufacturing teams to support product introduction
  • Collaborating directly with customers to understand technical requirements and deliver innovative solutions
About You

We are interested in speaking with engineers ranging from junior level through to more experienced design engineers.

You will ideally have:

  • Degree, HND or equivalent qualification in Electrical or Electronic Engineering
  • Experience within power electronics, power conversion or magnetic component design
  • Understanding of transformers, inductors, switch mode power supplies or related technologies
  • Experience using laboratory test equipment such as oscilloscopes, power analysers or LCR meters
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • A practical, hands-on engineering approach

Experience with magnetic simulation tools, finite element analysis (FEA/FEM), Ansys, Maxwell or similar software would be advantageous, although not essential.

Why Join?
  • Join a growing specialist business operating in a technically complex and rapidly expanding market
  • Work on a wide variety of bespoke projects rather than repetitive product support
  • Gain exposure to world-class expertise in high-frequency magnetics and planar magnetics
  • Be part of a small engineering team where your contribution genuinely makes an impact
  • Opportunity to travel to industry exhibitions and technical conferences across the UK and Europe

Whether you're already working within magnetics design or have a background in power electronics and want to develop specialist expertise in this niche field, we'd love to hear from you.

We believe that diversity and inclusion at Morgan Ryder Associates are critical to our success as DE&I positive company, so we want to recruit, develop, and keep the best talent.
