Salary: £32,773 to £35,049 per annum (depending on experience)

As part of STFC’s Estates Services, you will support the delivery of flexible, customer-focused, and efficient services aligned with STFC’s vision, values, and objectives. The team must be agile and adaptable to meet diverse needs, and members may lead or participate in projects outside their normal remit.

The primary responsibility is to carry out planned and reactive statutory maintenance to sustain and improve electrical systems supporting STFC’s scientific programs. This includes maintenance across three sites—RAL, Chilbolton Observatory, and The Cosener’s House Hotel—and involves ensuring compliance with industry standards and safety codes, managed via CAFM software. The role also includes installing new or replacement mechanical and electrical systems.

Role Responsibilities

  • Carry out routine emergency light testing in relevant buildings
  • Perform planned maintenance on water heaters and kettles
  • Conduct fire alarm isolations for estates and contractors
  • Maintain accurate compliance records with the Estates Helpdesk
  • Occasionally perform Legionella control activities
  • Assist in water quality audits of systems
  • Assess risk assessments and method statements
  • Follow safe systems of work, permits, and isolation procedures
  • Ensure timely completion of works to minimize impact on scientific activities
  • Participate in on-call duties on a rotational basis
  • Mentor and develop team members, including apprentices and trainees

Estates and Corporate Responsibilities

Support the Estates Services to deliver flexible, customer-focused, and efficient services, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability to meet changing needs.

Essential Shortlisting Criteria

  • Relevant NVQ Level 2/3 qualification in Electrical services
  • Emergency Lighting Fundamentals and Safe Isolation training (NICEIC)
  • Health & Safety qualification

Desirable (training provided)

  • Legionella, Hot and Cold-Water Services training
  • Additional Health & Safety qualifications
  • NICEIC electrical fundamentals

Knowledge and Experience

  • Experience in electrical/building services roles
  • Fault diagnosis and resolution skills in electrical systems
  • Proven maintenance experience
  • Understanding of health and safety legislation
  • Basic familiarity with CAFM systems

Personal Skills and Qualities

  • Good communication, confident and friendly
  • Reliable with good time management
  • Organized with task prioritization skills
  • Able to work out-of-hours and weekends when required
  • Self-motivated with minimal supervision
