Job summary

Coleg Sir Gar in Ammanford Campus is seeking an Educational Support Assistant to support students with a range of learning needs and disabilities, promoting independence and progress in literacy and numeracy.

The post requires teamwork and clear communication, plus willingness to undertake First Aid at Work and Manual Handling training.

Qualifications

  • GCSE English at minimum Grade C or equivalent.
  • GCSE Mathematics at minimum Grade C or equivalent.
  • First Aid at Work Qualification (or willingness to undertake).
  • Manual Handling training (or willingness to undertake).
  • Experience of working with individuals with learning difficulties and/or disabilities.
  • Good communication and diplomacy.
  • Good interpersonal and teamwork skills.
  • Good presentational and computer literacy skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provide medical support and personal care per student needs under guidance.
  • Help students organize files and manage time.
  • Aid students with information gathering and understanding instructions.
  • Encourage students to develop ICT skills for assignments.
  • Provide break or lunch supervision as required.
  • Deliver one-to-one or group support based on needs.

The main purpose of working within the ILS Entry Team is to promote independence and support learners who have a range of needs of a physical or learning nature. Key to learners’ progression is the improvement of both their literacy and numeracy skills alongside independent living skills.

The main purpose of the post is to provide support to students with a range of learning difficulties & disabilities.

The post is both challenging and very rewarding. It is an essential requirement for the successful applicant to be able to work as part of a team and communicate in differing forms and at varying levels.

Key Responsibilities
  • provide medical support and personal care assistance to individual students - with appropriate guidance and training, as and when directed by a member of the management team;
  • help the student with the organisation of files;
  • aid the student with time management and personal organisation;
  • encourage and support the student to develop a range of information gathering skills;
  • provide the student with help in understanding oral and written instruction;
  • accompany individuals/small groups on residential trips and visits where necessary;
  • encourage the student to develop good ICT skills for the presentation of assignments;
  • provide break and/or lunch supervision; as and when required or directed by a member of the management team;
  • provide one to one or general class support based upon student need and skills match;
  • transcribe materials into accessible formats when necessary;
  • carry out any other duties as directed by the Principal/Chief Executive commensurate with the grade of the post at the initial place of work or other locations within the College.
Skills Knowledge and Expertise
Essential Criteria
  • GCSE English at minimum Grade C or O Level equivalent
  • GCSE Mathematics at minimum Grade C or O Level equivalent
  • First Aid at Work Qualified (If you are not qualified in FAW, you will be expected to undertake this training as soon as possible)
  • Manual Handling (If you are not qualified in manual handling, you will be expected to undertake this training as soon as possible)
  • Relevant experience of working with individuals with learning difficulties and/or disabilities
  • Good communicator with diplomacy and tact
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work harmoniously with colleagues
  • Good presentational skills
  • Good computer literacy skills
Desirable Criteria
  • Food Safety Certificate (If you are not qualified in Food safety, you will be expected to undertake this training as soon as possible)
  • British Sign Language Qualification or any other communication qualification
Welsh Language Requirements
  • Welsh Oracy (Listening/Speaking) - Level 2 Essential
  • Welsh Literacy (Writing/Reading) - Level 2 Essential
