Job summary

Coleg Sir Gar and Coleg Ceredigion are seeking a dedicated support worker for the ILS Entry Team to promote independence for learners with a range of needs. The role focuses on improving literacy and numeracy alongside independent living skills, with duties spanning one-to-one and group student support across campus.

The post emphasizes teamwork, effective communication, and flexibility to adapt to varying levels of student need.

Qualifications

  • Essential criteria: GCSE English at minimum Grade C or O Level equivalent.
  • Essential criteria: GCSE Mathematics at minimum Grade C or O Level equivalent.
  • Essential criteria: First Aid at Work qualification or willing to undertake training.
  • Essential criteria: Manual Handling qualification or willing to undertake training.
  • Essential criteria: Relevant experience of working with individuals with learning difficulties and/or disabilities.
  • Essential criteria: Good communicator with diplomacy and tact.
  • Essential criteria: Good interpersonal skills.
  • Essential criteria: Ability to present information clearly.
  • Essential criteria: Good computer literacy.

Responsibilities

  • Provide medical support and personal care assistance to individual students under guidance.
  • Help students organise files and manage time.
  • Encourage and support development of information gathering skills.
  • Assist students in understanding oral and written instructions.
  • Accompany individuals/groups on trips when required.
  • Encourage ICT skills for assignment presentation.
  • Provide supervision during breaks/lunches as needed.
  • Offer one-to-one or group support according to student needs.
  • Transcribe materials into accessible formats when necessary.

The main purpose of working within the ILS Entry Team is to promote independence and support learners who have a range of needs of a physical or learning nature. Key to learners’ progression is the improvement of both their literacy and numeracy skills alongside independent living skills.

The main purpose of the post is to provide support to students with a range of learning difficulties & disabilities.

The post is both challenging and very rewarding. It is an essential requirement for the successful applicant to be able to work as part of a team and communicate in differing forms and at varying levels.

Key Responsibilities
  • provide medical support and personal care assistance to individual students - with appropriate guidance and training, as and when directed by a member of the management team;
  • help the student with the organisation of files;
  • aid the student with time management and personal organisation;
  • encourage and support the student to develop a range of information gathering skills;
  • provide the student with help in understanding oral and written instruction;
  • accompany individuals/small groups on residential trips and visits where necessary;
  • encourage the student to develop good ICT skills for the presentation of assignments;
  • provide break and/or lunch supervision; as and when required or directed by a member of the management team;
  • provide one to one or general class support based upon student need and skills match;
  • transcribe materials into accessible formats when necessary;
  • carry out any other duties as directed by the Principal/Chief Executive commensurate with the grade of the post at the initial place of work or other locations within the College.
Skills Knowledge and Expertise

Essential Criteria:

  • GCSE English at minimum Grade C or O Level equivalent
  • GCSE Mathematics at minimum Grade C or O Level equivalent
  • First Aid at Work Qualified (If you are not qualified in FAW, you will be expected to undertake this training as soon as possible)
  • Manual Handling (If you are not qualified in manual handling, you will be expected to undertake this training as soon as possible)
  • Relevant experience of working with individuals with learning difficulties and/or disabilities
  • Good communicator with diplomacy and tact
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work harmoniously with colleagues
  • Good presentational skills
  • Good computer literacy skills

Desirable Criteria:

  • Food Safety Certificate (If you are not qualified in Food safety, you will be expected to undertake this training as soon as possible)
  • British Sign Language Qualification or any other communication qualification
Welsh Language Requirements:
  • Welsh Oracy (Listening/Speaking) - Level 2 Essential
  • Welsh Literacy (Writing/Reading) - Level 2 Essential
