Job summary

Coleg Sir Gâr and Coleg Ceredigion are seeking an Educational Support Assistant to support learners with a range of needs, promoting independence and improving literacy and numeracy skills. The role requires teamwork, good communication, and a proactive approach to helping students with disabilities.

The post involves assisting students with personal care, ICT, and information gathering, as well as supervising breaks and accompanying on trips, with opportunities for professional development.

Qualifications

• GCSE English and Maths at minimum Grade C or equivalent
• First Aid at Work qualification required or to be obtained
• Manual Handling training or willingness to undertake training
• Experience working with individuals with learning difficulties or disabilities
• Good communication, diplomacy, and interpersonal skills
• Ability to work harmoniously with colleagues
• Strong presentational and ICT skills
• Computer literacy and ability to use standard software tools

Responsibilities

• Provide medical support and personal care to individual students with guidance
• Assist in organising student files
• Support time management and personal organisation for learners
• Help learners develop information gathering skills
• Assist in understanding oral and written instructions
• Accompany students on residential trips as needed
• Encourage ICT skills for presentation of assignments
• Provide supervision during breaks/lunchtimes
• Offer one-to-one or group support matching student needs
• Transcribe materials into accessible formats when required
• Carry out other duties as directed by the Principal/Chief Executive

Educational Support Assistant

The main purpose of working within the ILS Entry Team is to promote independence and support learners who have a range of needs of a physical or learning nature. Key to learners’ progression is the improvement of both their literacy and numeracy skills alongside independent living skills.

The main purpose of the post is to provide support to students with a range of learning difficulties & disabilities.

The post is both challenging and very rewarding. It is an essential requirement for the successful applicant to be able to work as part of a team and communicate in differing forms and at varying levels.

Key Responsibilities

The Educational Support Assistant will be expected to:

• provide medical support and personal care assistance to individual students - with appropriate guidance and training, as and when directed by a member of the management team;
• help the student with the organisation of files;
• aid the student with time management and personal organisation;
• encourage and support the student to develop a range of information gathering skills;
• provide the student with help in understanding oral and written instruction;
• accompany individuals/small groups on residential trips and visits where necessary;
• encourage the student to develop good ICT skills for the presentation of assignments;
• provide break and/or lunch supervision; as and when required or directed by a member of the management team;
• provide one to one or general class support based upon student need and skills match;
• transcribe materials into accessible formats when necessary;
• carry out any other duties as directed by the Principal/Chief Executive commensurate with the grade of the post at the initial place of work or other locations within the College.

Skills Knowledge and Expertise

Essential Criteria:

• GCSE English at minimum Grade C or O Level equivalent
• GCSE Mathematics at minimum Grade C or O Level equivalent
• First Aid at Work Qualified (If you are not qualified in FAW, you will be expected to undertake this training as soon as possible)
• Manual Handling (If you are not qualified in manual handling, you will be expected to undertake this training as soon as possible)
• Relevant experience of working with individuals with learning difficulties and/or disabilities
• Good communicator with diplomacy and tact
• Good interpersonal skills
• Ability to work harmoniously with colleagues
• Good presentational skills
• Good computer literacy skills

Desirable Criteria:

• Food Safety Certificate (If you are not qualified in Food safety, you will be expected to undertake this training as soon as possible)
• British Sign Language Qualification or any other communication qualification

Welsh Language Requirements:

• Welsh Oracy (Listening/Speaking) - Level 2 Essential
• Welsh Literacy (Writing/Reading) - Level 2 Essential
