The role:

The successful candidate will assist in providing scientific and technical laboratory support to staff, students, and visitors at the Earlham Institute (EI). They will help ensure the safe and efficient operation of the laboratories, and that all samples, reagents, and waste are handled, stored, and disposed of correctly. They will also assist with the maintenance and servicing of all laboratory equipment and facilities at the Institute.

You will be the only laboratory technician supporting around 40 laboratory users and students. You will be part of the team, reporting to the Operational and Laboratory Manager.

The role requires working independently for most of the time, with occasional teamwork. It offers opportunities to develop management and communication skills through the delivery of laboratory tasks and small projects aimed at improving the current service. The focus is on maintaining good laboratory practices throughout the Institute, with potential for growth and skill development in laboratory management and health and safety.

Given the variety of research at the Institute, there will also be opportunities to expand your scientific knowledge and understanding of the techniques and equipment used.

The ideal candidate:

• Should have three A-levels (or equivalent), including a science-based subject, or previous laboratory experience.
• Must demonstrate sound IT skills.
• Should be able to work well independently and as part of a team.
• Good communication, organizational skills, and attention to detail are essential for promoting safe working and good laboratory practice.

Additional information:

• Salary on appointment will range from £22,011 to £24,000 per annum, depending on qualifications and experience. A higher salary may be considered for exceptional candidates.
• This is a full-time position with a 5-year contract.
