Job Description

At AtkinsRéalis, our team of ecologists work throughout the UK to deliver a diverse range of challenging and exciting projects that benefit our clients, biodiversity and society.

To meet our growing project workload and help us design and apply new approaches to our work, we are looking for an enthusiastic Ecologist to join our Glasgow office.

Joining us, you will have the opportunity to contribute to nationally significant and high-profile projects, with many of our projects winning awards for biodiversity enhancements, innovation, and knowledge sharing. Our ecology team also won the inaugural CIEEM Large-Scale Consultancy of the Year Award in 2018 and has been highly commended in the same award category each year thereafter.

Key Roles/Responsibilities:

  • Providing ecological input to a varied range of projects across different sectors, including leading on infrastructure projects, managing project programmes and budgets.
  • Collaborating with our multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Planning, coordinating and undertaking field surveys; analysing and interpreting survey results.
  • Designing and co-ordinating ecological mitigation.
  • Authoring and checking a range of ecological reports and licence applications.
  • Managing work enquiries, preparing bids and building client relationships.
  • Actively identifying, raising, managing and mitigating risks, particularly within a Project/Framework environment.
  • Proactively providing innovation on projects and within the ecology team.

Training and Development:

  • AtkinsRéalis is committed to developing the knowledge and skills of our ecologists. This role will have tailored mentoring and support towards achieving career goals, such as Chartership. Appropriate training courses external and internal will be reviewed with your mentor and Practice Manager.

Experience and Skills Requirements:

  • A degree in ecology or closely related field.
  • Membership of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM), or equivalent. AtkinsRéalis to cover membership costs.
  • An understanding of requirement for biodiversity enhancements in line with National Planning Framework 4, and direct experience of applying this on projects or demonstrable understanding of the principles.
  • Ideally Field Identification Skills Certificate (FISC) Level 3 or above, or be able to demonstrate that skills are equivalent to this.
  • Strong skills in report writing, including preparing Preliminary Ecological Assessments, Ecological Impact Assessments. Experience in preparing Biodiversity Chapters for Environmental Impact Assessments and Habitats Regulations Assessment (including Appropriate Assessment) is desirable but not essential.
  • Strong protected species survey skills, including demonstrable competency to capable level in line with CIEEM’s Competency Framework to lead protected species surveys is essential.
  • Protected species survey licence(s) are desirable but not essential. A NatureScot bat licenced ecologist is particularly desirable.
  • Strong collaborative behaviours to interface with multi-disciplinary teams, market teams, and other stakeholders.
  • Demonstrable project management experience including technical, financial and quality assurance aspects is desirable.
  • A full UK/EEC driving licence.
