Job Title - Senior Ecologist

Job Type: Permanent
Location: GUILFORD AREA
Salary: Highly competitive salary depending on skills and experience, with company van or allowance and general benefits. General hours of work are 40 hours per week, between Monday and Friday.

Location: Home Based. Travel will be required, hence a full clean driving licence is essential.

About The Role Of Senior Ecologist

You will be joining the professional and friendly CGC team working remotely from home covering all work locations and clients. Work will be for varied clients including Highways, Local Authorities, housing associations, infrastructure, and private sector. Our work is varied and covers large parts of the UK. As a CGS Senior Ecologist, you will work within the Environmental Team supporting a growing business in the Midlands Region.

The ideal candidate must be comfortable working in a fast-paced consultancy and be able to manage multiple projects to assist the existing bespoke team. The role will involve project management of ecological/environmental schemes for various clients, alongside some field-based work including ecological surveys, asset surveys, and ecological clerk of works. This role suits a candidate with a few years of industry experience seeking a rewarding opportunity.

Responsibilities of a Senior Ecologist
  • Technical environmental and ecological lead on projects
  • Ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, planning conditions, and associated documents to help reduce risks and delays
  • Supervising contractors and ensuring compliance with protected species licences and environmental protection measures
  • Mentoring and training junior team members
  • Conducting extended Phase 1 habitat/UKHabs surveys
  • Protected species surveys
  • Formulating mitigation proposals and habitat creation schemes
  • Ecological Clerk of Works
  • Preparing technical reports for planning submissions
  • Biodiversity Net Gain Assessments
  • Providing ecological input into EIAs
What good looks like as a Senior Ecologist
  • Degree in a relevant scientific or environmental discipline
  • Knowledge of ecology, legislation, survey techniques, and the planning process
  • Experience in ecological surveys/environmental sector
  • Experience with protected species surveys, PEA, Phase 1 habitat surveys, UKHabs
  • Level 2 Bat licence holder or near to achieving
  • Experience with bat recording analysis software
  • Ecological Clerk of Works experience
  • Experience delivering projects in a commercial environment
  • Stakeholder engagement experience
  • Data interpretation skills
  • Excellent report writing skills
  • Experience in fee proposals, project management, and client liaison
  • Self-motivated and autonomous work ethic
  • Ability to prioritize and manage workload
  • Attention to detail and report accuracy
  • Approachable, proactive, ambitious, well-organized
  • Membership of CIEEM or equivalent
  • Full UK driving licence
What else looks good
  • Producing Protected Species Survey Licences (especially bat)
  • People management and mentoring experience
  • Membership of Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management or working towards it
  • Experience with linear infrastructure and property development projects
  • GIS experience
