Job description

Job Title: Senior/Principal Terrestrial BNG Specialist

Location: Epsom (Remote/Hybrid options available)

Are you an experienced and enthusiastic Senior or Principal Terrestrial Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) Specialist looking to join a forward-thinking and innovative ecology team? We are working on behalf of a leading environmental consultancy, renowned for its contributions to biodiversity and sustainability, to find a passionate expert to help shape the future of biodiversity net gain across a range of exciting projects.

About the Role:

As a Senior/Principal Terrestrial BNG Specialist, you will have the opportunity to lead nationally significant infrastructure projects, working on a variety of high-profile and award-winning initiatives. You will play a pivotal role in driving the implementation of nature-based solutions and BNG principles within the projects, helping clients work towards a nature-positive future. Your expertise will contribute to impactful projects that benefit both biodiversity and society at large.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Lead on large-scale infrastructure projects, managing project programmes and budgets.
  2. Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams and engage with stakeholders to deliver successful ecological outcomes.
  3. Conduct and oversee field surveys, interpreting and analyzing survey results.
  4. Design and coordinate ecological mitigation strategies.
  5. Author and review a wide range of ecological reports, including BNG assessments, management plans, and other ecological documents.
  6. Provide mentorship to junior staff, fostering development in BNG and ecology practices.
  7. Join a national network of BNG experts, contributing to the advancement of technical excellence and innovation.
  8. Manage work inquiries, assist in preparing bids, and help build strong client relationships.
  9. Contribute to the growth and development of the ecological portfolio in the Southern region, engaging with both internal and external clients.

What You Can Bring:

  1. Membership of CIEEM or equivalent, with chartership (CEcol or CEnv) preferred (AtkinsRéalis covers membership costs).
  2. A degree in ecology or a related field (desirable but not essential).
  3. Extensive project management experience, including technical, financial, and quality assurance aspects.
  4. Strong botanical skills (FISC level 4 or equivalent experience).
  5. In-depth knowledge of UK Habitat survey, habitat condition assessments, and the Defra Biodiversity Metric, with demonstrated experience in BNG assessments.
  6. Experience in writing technical reports, including BNG reporting, Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIAs), and Habitat Regulations Assessments (HRAs).
  7. Demonstrable experience on Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects and familiarity with the DCO process.
  8. Protected species survey licence(s) are advantageous.
  9. Full UK driving licence.
