About the Role

Pembrokeshire County Council is seeking a focussed, dynamic planning ecologist with excellent communication skills to support development that enhances the built and natural environment in Pembrokeshire.

The post holder will provide specialist advice on ecology within the land use planning process, ensuring compliance with legislation and policy, and engaging with external stakeholders.

Qualifications and Skills

Applicants need a degree in ecology or a related subject, with relevant experience. Knowledge of legislation such as the Habitats Regulations and planning guidance is essential. The candidate should be articulate, self-motivated, organized, and highly computer literate, including proficiency in GIS and databases.

Additional Details

This is a part-time maternity cover position, likely ending in August 2024. Hours depend on experience and costs. Home-based working will be considered.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Assess ecological implications of planning applications, ensuring compliance with relevant policies and legislation.
  2. Interpret evidence and advise on ecological mitigation approaches.
  3. Identify and consider ecological impacts and biodiversity gains in County Council projects and processes.
  4. Conduct screening and scoping for planning applications, including Environmental Impact Assessments and Habitats Regulations assessments, to protect European sites and important habitats.
  5. Collaborate with Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority officers to provide specialist advice.
  6. Explain ecological requirements to the public regarding planning applications.
