Job description

Associate Practitioner Biochemistry (Band 4)

The post is within the Biochemistry Department at The Royal Derby Hospital site and offers exciting opportunities for learning and development of existing skills.

Associate Practitioners are required to assist the Biomedical Scientist staff. They are responsible for performing analyses of patient samples using manual and automated methods, maintaining analysers, conducting IQC, and packaging and sending referred work to other hospitals.

Applicants should have 5 GCSEs including English and Maths, A levels or a Science Foundation Degree (Skill level 5), or NVQ clinical laboratory support level 3. Recent Pathology Laboratory experience within the last 12 months is required. Candidates should be enthusiastic, self-motivated, with good communication, excellent IT, planning, and organizational skills.

After suitable training, successful applicants will participate in a shift rota covering 24 hours, 7 days a week, due to the need for a robust 24/7 service. We encourage you to contact us to discuss the post further or to arrange an informal visit.

  • Work independently to organize daily workload, ensuring departmental test turnaround standards are met.
  • Prioritize sample processing to achieve turnaround times, considering the urgency of results for doctors.
  • Assist senior staff with planning and evaluating the service.
  • Supervise trainee BMSs and MLAs within the section.
  • Ensure cost-effective use of equipment and consumables; assist with stock control.
  • Perform technical scientific investigations involving blood and body fluids.
  • Maintain clinical records related to activities, including inputting and investigating test results.
